i think depends on the mum and the baby.dd i was in for about 3 days but she was jaundice and id been put to sleep,ds1 i think about 3 days and ds2 was 5 days as was poorly and i had damaged bladder.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/05/2008 10:52

Current NICE standards say 24 hours, if you are not feverish etc etc.

In practice, this is more possible if you have the CS before noon (hospitals count days funny ). With my first CS, I was in for over 48 hours, second time around, I was out about 30 hours after the CS.

HeadFairy · 14/05/2008 10:53

I think they may want you in longer, it does depend if it's a planned cs or emergency. Mine was planned and it took a good 24 hours for me to have full movement in my legs and lower body, the catheter was taken out after 24 hours and my first trip to the loo was just afterwards and it was a pretty slow shuffle. I think they'd want you to be a bit more stable on your feet before they send you home. I went home after 3 days but by then I was totally back to normal (apart from the wound)

titchy · 14/05/2008 10:53

You can discharge yourself after half an hour if you want! You'd have to sign loads of disclaimers and would be very strongly advised not toleave. But short of sectioning you they cannot force you to stay against your will.

That said a 3 days stay is the norm, and having had 2 CSs I'd advise a 3 days stay too. Yes you could leave after 24 hours but you need to take it VERY easy.

titchy · 14/05/2008 10:54

Oh yes the catheter - if you went home after half an hour you'd be peeing everywhere!

cheesesarnie · 14/05/2008 10:55

i took my catheter home with me for ten days!dc thought it was great!

titchy · 14/05/2008 11:03

You had it in for 10 days!!!! Fantastic. I often wish I had one in permanently - would mean could MN to my heart's content without annoying loo-breaks

bundle · 14/05/2008 11:04

i stayed in for 4 days first time, 3 the second time

cheesesarnie · 14/05/2008 11:06

titchy -dc thought was fab as mummy could wee standing up!.was because of the bladder damage.

NotQuiteCockney · 14/05/2008 11:06

The CS I had, where I stayed in for 30 hours, was an 'emergency' CS. (Not crash!)

It depends on your hospital, it depends on your support at home, it depends on a lot of things - but for me, getting out after 30 hours was very wise.

I don't sleep well in strange places, and I had very good support at home. (Heck, I had a retired consultant obs-gyne under my roof for the first night at home! Granted, she's my MIL, but still ...)

VictorianSqualor · 14/05/2008 11:13

I had a CS 4weeks ago, as I had it at nearly 3pm the next day was counted as 'day 1'.

I asked to go home 'day2' and was told if i'd asked earlier (I asked when DS1 started to cry as i wasnt going home with them at 8pm) then I couldve gone, but I should've told them sooner because DS2 needed to see the paedatrician before I left, plus they needed to get my tablets sorted to take home, so I agreed to go the next morning instead.

In the end I had to discharge myself because the cons wouldn't discharge me as I had a temperature 0.5c higher than normal It took about 3 hours for me to get to see the paed and get discharged even after I'd told them the night before I was leaving the next day so make sure you tell them if you're planning on leaving early or you may not be able to without waiting around for paeds.

ShowOfHands · 14/05/2008 11:14

DD was born at 21.55 on the Thursday night by em cs. My discharge papers were signed by a consultant at 10.30am on the Friday morning- so 12 hours. They were practically pushing me out the door. The paediatrician wouldn't discharge dd though due to PROM and jaundice (precautionary) and I stayed in with her for an extra night.

VictorianSqualor · 14/05/2008 11:14

actually, I asked to go home 'day 1' and went home 'day 2' so about 50hours after my cs.

chrissnow · 14/05/2008 11:22

dd1 was born 12.15pm on a Sunday. I was discharged at about 11am on the Monday. Luckily (I think ) the consultant, Paed and Physio all did very early morning rounds on a Monday for some reason.
With dd2 I had a Vbac yet I was in for nearly 2 days as I had her later in the evening on a different day of the week and the medical staff were all later (and far more spaced out) with dd1 the physio was actually stood by the curtains waiting for the paed to finish. dd2 also had to have 24hrs meconium obs. I'd probably have got out sooner had I agreed to go for the 2 days at the cottage/maternity aftercare unit thingy. I wanted to get home to see dd1/dh though (in hindsight should have taken the 2 days off!!! I won't get that again for 20 years!!!!!!)

diplodocus · 14/05/2008 11:26

48 hours for me wih both emergency sections. Would have liked to go earlier, but would have needed to discharge myself

Cedes · 14/05/2008 13:44

Gosh, I live in Dubai and they keep in you for a minimum of four nights, I stayed in 5 nights with ds1as he had jaundice - am due to go in for second cs on Monday and plan to stay for four nights, having said this the hospital is great, husbands can stay overnight in yoru room and the food is really good!!

Beeper · 14/05/2008 13:59

lol you will never get out after 24 hours.
I just had emerg under GA and I was in for 4 days and had to push to get out.

lackaDAISYcal · 14/05/2008 14:01

My DD was delivered by Elective c-section at 11:30 am. I was asked next morning if I wanted to go home

I stayed for three days in the end, but they kept asking me twice a day if I was ready to go home!

that was at St James' in Leeds.

I went in on Wednesday and left on Friday. That was only because I hated not being with my other ds and generally dislike hospitals. Be sensible and take as much time as you need. It's hard work when you get home so enjoy the 'rest' while you can.

Yeni · 14/05/2008 14:08

I was in for 48 hours after they started the operation. I was in for 3 hours waiting to go into theatre. I remember asking the same question on here before I went in because I was desperate to get home after only one night. In the event they weren't keen to let me out the next day even though the staff kept commenting on how mobile I was.

All going well you should be up and about the day after the surgery and they will encourage you to move around as much as possible. I was pacing up and down the corridor outside the MW's office whenever I wasn't feeding DS and I think that helped me get out quickly.

I also got a room to myself this time which made it a lot more bearable so it wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be.

Haylstones · 14/05/2008 14:25

I had ds at 4pm on the Sunday and went home on Tuesday lunch time

fifisworld · 14/05/2008 15:54
