How to coax a baby out?!

Elephantin · 23/03/2025 21:19

39+3 into my third pregnancy. Quite fed up now, and would like to try and encourage baby to come out! 😂 I know that everything is probably an old wives tale, but had anyone got any tips?

First and second were both induced, so despite this being number three I still feel I’ve no idea what I’m doing! Booked for a sweep tomorrow and not sure whether or not to have it.

Curry!

Littleredracecar · 23/03/2025 21:26

Is there a reason they are doing a sweep before baby is even due?
While I totally get wanting to encourage baby out I think most things are just old wives tales and baby will come when it’s ready.
You could try the ‘miles circuit’ as even though it’s unlikely to trigger labour it might help get baby positioned well which is always good.

Thank you, I’ll have a google of the miles circuit.

Sweep has been offered as I was obviously quite convincing in telling them I have no intention of going overdue. But now I think that I was probably a little bit rash there, and should give it a little more time, even if it’s just until 40+0.

The only thing ever shown to have any possible efficacy is sex, as sperm has something in it to help open the cervix, but even that is a low probability. Getting the oxytocin flowing, feeling calm and relaxed, watching a rom-com, all help the hormonal changes needed for labour. But I’m afraid they come when they come really!

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/03/2025 21:31

40 weeks also isn’t overdue, up to 42 to is entirely normal full term.

I’ll take the excuse to watch a rom com, though I know you’re right and it’s pretty much just a waiting game!

I know! I think the baby knows too, unfortunately 😂

Balloon blowing can work as bearing down triggers things.

ObliviousCoalmine · 23/03/2025 21:33

Honestly, just leave the baby be. It’ll come when it’s ready, spend some time resting and eating hot food, those days are numbered.

Bathnet · 23/03/2025 21:33

Your due date isn’t an eviction notice

Philandbill · 23/03/2025 21:36

Sex is suggested because there is prostaglandin in semen, and this ripens the cervix. Also because it would (hopefully!) up your oxytocin levels and oxytocin is the hormone that "powers" contractions. However the Cochrane database says effectiveness of sex in starting labour is uncertain.
But if you fancy it why not? 😁

The curry and rom com currently sounds more appealing! 😂🙈

Breast pump

Started things moving with me. There's info online how frequently etc to do it but my contractions started whilst using it

Funnily enough, the pregnancy before that I was still breastfeeding my toddler so that had no effect as I suppose my body and hormones were used to it.

ButterflySkies · 23/03/2025 21:55

sex after a sweep worked for my first (41+something), my waters went at 36 weeks with baby 2 after i spent the day wfh on the birthing ball. I think they were both probably “cooked” and ready though… first because she was overdue, second my blood pressure had sky rocketed after a horrific pregnancy (either he or my body had finally said enough!) x

Karen4President · 23/03/2025 21:56

Sex and him finishing inside.

I think those days ended when my eldest was born!

Anyway, going to try and get some rest tonight and hopefully tomorrow will be a more comfortable day.

What set me off with dd1, was watching a film that absolutely cracked me up - laughing till I cried. Waters broke not long afterwards.
