Section question

Following on from the section thread earlier, I thought a section could only be performed if it was necessary, ie breech, transverse or something happening through an attempted vaginal delivery.

I appreciate that you can probably pay for a section if it is your preference at say the Portland but can you actually just say I want a section on the NHS?

You can request a section if you've had a previous difficult vaginal delivery, or a previous section for whatever reason.

I'm not entirely sure where you would stand if you wanted a section to avoid a vaginal delivery - not because you were terrified of a vaginal delivery, but it was just your preference. NICE guidelines state that, when push comes to shove (as it were) maternal preference should be the over-riding factor when delivery options are considered, but how - and if - this is usually put into practice I don't know.

FWIW, yes c-sections are costly, but i recently read a report which claimed botched vag deliveries - with often subsequent medical care/repair work/compensation for mother and baby - actually cost the NHS more.

Yes. You can get one if you make your desires known. You will have to stand your ground and make it very clear this is your desire. Some hospitals will give it to you. Some won't.

Best to choose your hospital wisely (and early!).
