Has anyone given birth in Sheffield or the surrounding areas?

I'm just researching the hospitals and birthing centres and keep seeing conflicting reviews.

Does anyone have any experience giving birth in South Yorkshire? If you did, how did it go? Is there anywhere I should avoid?

Currently Pinderfields seems to be the best choice. It's around 30 minutes away from me, Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham are all between 20-30 minutes away.

Thank you

Barnsley almost killed me and my baby with poor care 4 years ago. Second was born in pinderfields which wasn't much better and was very busy and oversubscribed, with a concerning lack of beds. Although my SIL gave birth there last year and had a decent experience.

Not me but my Dsis had an awful experience at jessops with things being missed and baby needing ICU. There was an investigation after.

For her second child she opted for Barnsley and had a positive experience

I have had two babies in Doncaster hospital with no issues but I wouldn't trust them with my hamster in a&e .

I had two babies at Doncaster and have no complaints.
Jessops nearly killed my niece and sister in law through negligence.

Jessops is awful, once I was moved from High Dependency I was just dumped in a room & forgotten about. It's had a high rate of mother & baby deaths in the last few years as well. Chesterfield Royal is good if you can travel that far.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Chesterfield is looking like the best option. It's my husband's mum's local hospital as well which would be great for support as we don't have anyone who can do that around where we live.

Does anyone know if it's possible to switch trusts, how/when to do this and if it would ever be rejected? I had a Google and the information didn't look promising and said you have to appeal to the governing bodies and whatnot and that sounds stressful. I'm in early pregnancy so have bags of time but want to get my ducks in a row whilst I can still think straight!

I’ve heard conflicting things.

  • Rotherham: only heard great things
  • Jessops: one person I know with a bad experience, three with good (but there were all within the last 18 months). Jessops has a bad track record but perhaps it’s improved?

I will be following this thread as it’s something that I’ve been considering too.

Barnsley were crap for my care but amazing for LO who was in NICU and then continuing care for 7 weeks. I honestly don't know how you can judge, it seems like a very shit lottery.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 25/01/2025 07:40

I had excellent care in Barnsley for both babies, and hyperemisis in both pregnancies. However, my youngest is 13!! It is however, still the hospital of choice in this area, the alternatives being Huddersfield/Calderdale or Pinders.

A colleague of mine at work said Rotherham nearly killed her sister! Honestly it's just awful trying to pick, it seems like everywhere you turn there are claims of negligence and death and it's really scary.

When I checked the CQC for all local to me NONE of them are rated "good" for their maternity wards.

I'm still hoping for Chesterfield, I'm going to ask to see if I can transfer then because for me I think it makes the most sense! Husband and I are both anxious people, him slightly worse than me, this is our first baby and we're really worried something drastic will go wrong.

I gave birth in chesterfield back in April. I couldn't fault any of the care I received at all. Such lovely people and I had such a wonderful experience all in all

Thank you for chiming in! Glad to hear you had a successful birth; congratulations on your little one :)

I'm going to try my hardest to be transferred over to Chesterfield!
