Induction advice needed 37+1 with GD ..

Hi all,

I’ve just received a phone call from my midwife saying that I should be induced next week. I’m 37+1 weeks pregnant and I have gestational diabetes (GD). I’m feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure about what’s the right thing to do.

A few days ago, I had a growth scan, and the midwife mentioned that the baby is a normal size and everything looks good. However, the midwife who called today seems to think induction is necessary, not just because of size, but due to other risk factors.

I’ve been struggling to control my diet, and I’m not on medication for GD. The midwife did mention concerns, but I couldn’t help but feel like she was sort of fear-mongering, which makes it harder to make a decision.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice? I just don’t know what’s best right now.

This should help present your situation clearly to others, allowing for easier discussion and advice. Let me know if you want to tweak anything!

I’m 37 weeks pregnant with GD as well. I am diet controlled and was told I’d be induced at 40 weeks (although I’ve chosen a C-section, which is at 39 weeks at the moment). Baby isn’t estimated as too big though, no high readings and no extra fluid or other complications.

I’m guessing if you’re struggling with the diet then you’ve had high readings and it’s not worth starting medication this late on but they’re inducing as though you would have been?

Guidelines for diet controlled and no other complications/concerns is induce before 40+6 days so really depends on what the midwives extra concerns are.

Hi there it's a labour ward midwife. You can ask to see an obstetrician to explain the pros and cons of induction at 37 weeks. In my hospital doctors are usually happy to wait till 40 weeks before they induce a woman with gestational diabetes on diet control PROVIDING good blood sugar control and no other complications for example high blood pressure or reduced fetal movements. You can go to the maternity assessment unit and ask to be seen by a doctor. You can also ask for a personalised plan to delay induction. The doctor should explain the risks and benefits of all options including an option of an elective Caesarean. There are a couple of really good short books on induction written by midwives Sarah Wickham and Rachel Reed. Both books available on Amazon for a few pounds and could be read in a few hours. Highly recommend
