Experiences of going overdue with a large baby?

Elisabeth3468 · 27/12/2024 11:00

Baby is measuring over 90th centile and my son was fairly good size a week early so I have a tendency to believe the scans.
They have booked me for induction at 40 weeks, I really don't want one but worried about the risk of shoulder dystocia. I was thinking about pushing back the induction to 41 weeks.
I went for a sweep today which was unsuccessful as they couldn't get into my cervix (39 plus 2).
Anyone have any experience of waiting it out a bit and was your labour ok?
It's such a hard decision to make.
Induced with my son and it was an awful experience and birth.

I asked to be given to 40&10 days as decided I'd follow in the footsteps of my mum who went 10 days overdue with my brother. Got the pessary in the evening and was in labour by 5 am the following morning. Did have to have a section as he was massive but I think that would have happened anyway (had forceps with my first). Good luck, hope all goes well.

Thank you. This is my fear, my mum went to 42 weeks with my brother then 40 plus 10 with me. So I'd rather just get the induction earlier than risk the baby being so big. But also want that spontaneous labour experience and for baby to come when she's ready,

Was induced at 42 weeks with DS, took about 3 attempts and had to wait quite a while between pessarys. Tried 2 sweeps prior and no luck. Had to have forceps after 30 something hours as he was too large.

We had DS at a very large hospital, so a mass shared ward for a lot of the time. I didn't realise until after the fact you could book and pay for a private room (we tried once we were there but none available). I would look into that if you are also going down that route 🙂

ETA - I wasn't given the option/made aware I could change the induction date, I probably would have if I could

Went 17 days then was induced. Delivered after 10 hours and she was 10lb 6oz. I'm tiny with tiny hips.

The pushing is much easier after your first as your body seems to know what to do.

Big can mean log not a massive head and shoulders.

If you are really stressed about it ask for a c-section?

My pain free birth was #4 42 weeks and induced another big one. The difference was I was far more relaxed about the whole thing and managed with the tens and gas & air and declared it was so ok I'd do it again tomorrow.

I have had two massive DS - first was 9lbs 8oz l, induced at 41 weeks. Second was 10lbs 6oz, spontaneous delivery at 40+3. I decided to wait it out to at least 40+5 and had a truly beautiful birth experience. My first was a distressing induction as well, and I knew I wanted to avoid that if at all possible.

I turned induction down 7 times, as the doctors didn't want me to go past 39 weeks due to his estimated size. This was an informed decision, as I did a lot of research about the risks of large babies. I felt more comfortable with waiting for spontaneous delivery, than with induction based on my previous reaction too it.

I looked into the studies mentioned here, and discussed them with my care team as a starting point: www.instagram.com/p/Cc3DSDqo18d/?igsh=MTh0aHpsNWNrM3lqMA==

I also did as much as possible to get baby out early. Reflexology, optimal positioning exercises, miles circuit, random tiktok exercise videos - and basically didn't sit down for the last two weeks of my pregnancy.

Why would you not go for a planned section? The risks of not having one would outweigh any ideas of 'experiencing' something magical or natural etc. Possible lifelong post birth complications for either of you, possible emergency section...for what? An idea that 'our bodies were made for this'? When in reality, childbirth has never been straightforward for everyone.

YouBelongWithMe · 27/12/2024 12:05

My second child was 10lb, born on her due date.

My third was also measuring big. I went 15 days over and then consented to a pessary. In the end she was born a titchy 10lb3oz

Both births were very easy, vaginal births with no complications or other interventions.

There's a Facebook group called Ten Month Mamas UK - lots of helpful advice and experiences on there. I found it helpful when I went overdue with my second. Also, Dr Sara Wickham has great articles and books on this too - I read In Your Own Time which gave me much more confidence in my body.

Because I don't want a section for many reasons .
I've had a vaginal birth before for one and c section recovery is harder and I have a toddler to look after at home.
There is a small risk of shoulder dystocia with bigger babies but they can't predict which babies might get stuck .
It's not all for the magical experience , I just want to get the baby out as safest as possible. They didn't even suggest a section. They said because I am tall and second baby then vaginal birth is most appropriate.

I went to 40+13 with my three DDs. They ranged in size from 8.14 - 9.3 lbs, so not huge, but generously proportioned. All three births were (and yes, I'm aware this sounds smug) wonderful.

My DS, in contrast, was born on his due date at a comparatively small 7.13 lb. And his birth was fairly horrible.

WaitingForMojo · 27/12/2024 12:54

I went to 42+2 with dd, opted for daily monitoring rather than induction. She was born at home, 10lb 4oz.
I did a lot of research and decided I would rather c section than induction.

Still pregnant and due date tomorrow!
I have induction booked for Thursday but think I will cancel it and wait longer. I am so fed up of being pregnant now though.

I had an horrendous labour with DC1 - 36 hours after my waters broke he was born weighing 10lb 2oz.

I was induced at 37 weeks with both DCs 2 & 3. Very easy, quick labours. DC2 was 9lb and 3 was just over 7lb.

Good luck, whatever you decide! Fingers crossed you won’t wait too long. x

10lb11, 11 days over. The day before things kicked off I had accupuncture and went on huge walk. My hindwaters went around 8am the next day, contractions by lunchtime, went to hospital around 7pm, DS1 born around lunchtime the next day. I pushed for 90 minutes but needed forceps in theatre. It wasn't that bad tbh
