C section - daily blood thinning injections afterwards?

Peonyyyy · 21/12/2024 14:49

Hi!

I read somewhere that I’ll need to inject myself every day with blood thinners for about 10 days after the c section. Anyone else do this?

im confused because I had a c section 3 years ago and didn’t have to do this. Is it applicable to everyone?

id rather not but if it’s injecting myself or a blood clot I’d do the injecting… just seems odd I didn’t do it last time and wondering what’s changed.

I have had two c sections. One 6 years ago and one 4 years ago. I had to do injections both times, but was only for a week I think.

SwayingInTime · 21/12/2024 14:52

Have you picked up one more risk factor in the time between? An elective section is one risk factor but BMI>30, 3rd baby, Age>35 would all mean 2 risk factors and equal the injections.

stargazer02 · 21/12/2024 14:52

I didn't in my first and second (22 and 11 years ago) but maybe did in hospital and it was just a blur. I had to inject twice at home after having my now 8 year old, but that would be 4 or 5 days after birth max.

namechange1986 · 21/12/2024 14:52

Yes had Clexane injections after both sections.

oustedbymymate · 21/12/2024 14:53

I had ELCS 2022 and had blood thinners

Mortima · 21/12/2024 14:54

I didn't (15 months ago)

Mushroo · 21/12/2024 14:54

Yeh, I had to do them for about a week afterwards. It was honestly the part of the section I hated the most!

I made DH do them and it really stung

MumChp · 21/12/2024 14:54

I didn't.
Consult your midwife/doctor.

ilikecatsandponies · 21/12/2024 14:54

I had it after a PPH and got my mum to do them for me. Once I was walking round a lot they said I could stop so I didn't complete the course, I wonder if that's an option, depending on how your recovery goes.

PumpkinScarf · 21/12/2024 14:55

I had to with DD in 2022 but not with DS in 2023. No idea why,

HobnobsChoice · 21/12/2024 14:58

Clexane after my daughter and then clexane all through my pregnancy with my son and then for 10 days after. I was 37, fat and had a section. Clexane needles are not like having a flu jab. It's all pre filled and all you do is press the plunger down. Once it's all injected then a little cover springs over the needle. I didn't find them very painful and soon got into the habit of it

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 21/12/2024 14:58

I did but back in 2011

Peonyyyy · 21/12/2024 15:01

@SwayingInTime it is my section section and this time I’ll be over 35. I have a normal BMI. So I guess I might be having the injections as that’s two risk factors?

I guess I’ll get used to it, I certainly won’t refuse if it’s recommended but ideally would love to not have to as it’s just another thing to do while recovering 😩

I did, it's easy don't worry. Just grab some flesh and stab it in, it's tiny

Businessflake · 21/12/2024 15:14

I made my OH give me the injections. Couldn’t face doing it myself and to be honest I thought it was the least he could do in the circumstances!

georgepigg · 21/12/2024 15:16

I have had to twice. Not everyone who has a section has to as far as I know. Age, health etc will have an effect. So could be an age thing as obviously you’re older now. DH did mine as I’m squeamish. Into the numb part of your post-section stomach is my tip for you!

CCLCECSC · 21/12/2024 15:17

Yes I did for a week I think

endofthelinefinally · 21/12/2024 15:19

There is a scoring system based on risk factors. Your midwife can show you your score, it will be in your records.

whyonearthinallofthis · 21/12/2024 15:22

Little tip if you do need them. Check on your stomach where it feels numb and you can inject them there. Double check your allowed

I was doing them in my leg as advised in hospital and midwife said when she came to my home to just do it in the numb spots on my stomach(which was everywhere) I double checked and said really and she told me 100 percent yes

Lottie6712 · 21/12/2024 15:31

I had those injections with my first vaginal birth and not with my second. I asked the midwife why and she showed my a list of risk factors and I'd had enough the first birth to warrant the injections, but not the second. I imagine you didn't meet the minimum risk factors for the injections to be prescribed.

Peonyyyy · 21/12/2024 15:36

Thank you everyone! Noted on doing it in the numb bit, what a great tip!

Marmite27 · 21/12/2024 15:37

I had them for 2 weeks in 2018

Vickim03 · 21/12/2024 15:41

I had them with both mine. I asked if the midwife's could do mine at my local cottage hospital. They were happy to book me a daily appt to do this. Just had to take all the stuff with me including the sharps bin.

StopGo · 21/12/2024 15:46

My DD had a C-section a couple of months ago. Mid 30s and slim still had 10 days of blood thinning injections. Its standard practice at that hospital.

anon168231245630 · 21/12/2024 16:17

I had to do this after I had my cesareans in 2010 and 2019, no risk factors and was under 30 both times I gave birth. Maybe it's NHS board related.
