WWYD?! Help!

I’m not sure what to do!

Due to have an elective c-section on Monday, but started contracting at 8pm on Weds. Was checked yesterday and cervix was closed but today I’m 1cm dilated. Baby fine. Doc said I can have my section done tonight.

I was on the fence about having a VBAC, but I’ve not slept for two days now, and I’m 41 with a big cyst they’re going to take out if I have the c-section. I just can’t decide whether to take my chances, go home and see what happens naturally, or go through with the section. I know going into spontaneous labour has the best outcome for a VBAC but it’s not exactly been fast getting to 1cm, and I’m aware it could take days yet! Seems like such a gamble.

WWYD?!

I would go for the section tonight and cyst removed.

MonsieurBlobby · 20/12/2024 16:45

I've had two vaginal births and am freaked out by operations, but even I'd have the section this evening in this instance - get the cyst removed, and meet your baby before you get even more exhausted. Hope it all goes well x

Jingleberryalltheway · 20/12/2024 16:47

Why did you have the first section?

Goldenmimx · 20/12/2024 16:57

I'd have the section, at least you know then that baby will be here very soon after already not being able to sleep for 2 days. Good luck!! Very exciting

MrsWhites · 20/12/2024 17:01

I’d also have the section, you’ll need to have the cyst removed at some point anyway and after very little sleep an extended Labour in the run up to Christmas will be exhausting. Go with a section and get it over with!

If you need the cyst removed anyway i would just have the section tonight.

Greybeardy · 20/12/2024 17:45

will they definitely do the cyst if it's an out-of-hours section today? they might not so that is probably something to ask and factor into your decision.

Good point though the doc did mention it, so it’s on their radar to do it. I’ll get confirmation.

If you had the cyst removed later would it likely be key hole? If yes then I would go for VBAC but that says more about my preferences.

Unless the cyst might cause an issue with birth?

Get it done and then be home tomorrow for Xmas!

NewNameNoelle · 20/12/2024 18:35

In your shoes I would do tonight. You’re exhausted, you need the cyst removed anyway, you could be home with newborn for Christmas. Imagine being home in your own bed, with a baby, and no drama. Bliss.

delay and you’re even more exhausted and edging ever closer to a Christmas baby. Having had a rough vaginal birth I would take the offered c-section. If they’re suggesting it, take it.

best of luck

What did you decide to do ?! @Unsure4589

Unsure4589 · 24/12/2024 05:32

I took everyone’s advice and went for the c-section. Baby born not long after midnight on 21st. It wasn’t a pleasant c-sec, partly because it was technically an emergency and they prepped me for a longer surgery to remove the cyst and possibly my tube and ovary if necessary. This meant a spinal and an epidural, which the anaesthetist struggled to site and which gave me a horrific reaction post-op. But DS is here and well and I’m doing okay too!

Still feel a bit regretful of not proceeding with VBAC, but though labour got pretty intense for me, things were still progressing really slowly, so I could’ve easily ended up with EMCS anyway. I’m ineligible for future VBAC, but I’m as sure as can be that I’m never doing pregnancy and childbirth again! Hooray! 🎉
