Anyone had an estimated big baby that turned out to be smaller??

Went for a growth scan today at 38+6 .. baby 99th centile 🫣 in particular a large head but all measurements large. Currently estimated 9lb 1. Been advised to have a c section due to the risks of shoulder dystocia and/or an assisted birth which I have accepted. Nervous about the large size and deflated about the section but my priority is for him to be here safely. Just wondered if anyone else had been in my position and had a smaller baby? Perhaps where the growth scan was inaccurate. My bump is big and is 'all baby' so I do think he will be big but praying he's not as large as anticipated.

Yes and every woman I know (5) who were told big baby ended up with normal sized baby
mine was 8lbs perfectly healthy normal birth really really wish they would stop scarring women and recalibrate their measuring system as it’s obviously flawed

naemates · 13/12/2024 19:49

Anecdotally so many people. I let them induce me early due to a 'big baby' which led to a section three weeks before my due date, against my better judgement and he was 6lbs so would probably have been fine.

Difficult to argue with consultants though!

Dearover · 13/12/2024 19:51

We were told to expect 9-10lb boy. She was 12 days late and 5lbs. We tied knots in the end of her baby grows until she fitted them at 2-3 months.

2025willbemytime · 13/12/2024 19:52

Yes. Predicted 9-10lb. He wasn't even 7lb. I had polyhydromnious.

Sleetwave · 13/12/2024 19:52

I was told a small baby and he was very small so the scans are not always inaccurate.

MarleyAndMarleyWoohooohooohooohoooo · 13/12/2024 19:53

Dd was estimated 10lbs+ and was just over 8.
I don’t know anyone whose big baby estimate resulted in a big baby!

Coconutter24 · 13/12/2024 19:54

I was told my baby was going to be 10lb + but she was 9lb1oz

TeenLifeMum · 13/12/2024 19:55

3 weeks before dtds were born i was told they were already over 5lbs… they were born 4lbs 6 and 5lbs 2. Dd1 was “9lb minimum”… she was actually 6lb 14.

ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat · 13/12/2024 19:56

My neighbour had a 12lb-er.

Midwife sent me for a scan in case there was something in the water.

Consultant “thought” she was between 7lb and 9lb (so completely normal). Went 2 weeks overdue, she got stuck coming out and had to be pulled out with forceps. She was 8l. 10oz.

TeenLifeMum · 13/12/2024 19:56

I would add, my friend was told 11-12lbs and he was actually 13lb 8!!!

ChocoChocoLatte · 13/12/2024 19:57

DD1 10lb 4
DD2 11lb 1
DD3 9lb 14

And I had gestational diabetes with the third. There is no exact science to this, regardless of what they tell you - good luck!

Theyreallydid · 13/12/2024 19:58

No but I had the opposite. Concerns about growth and estimated to be 5.5 lb at 41 weeks. Born at 42 weeks and was 9 lb 9!!!!

RandomMess · 13/12/2024 19:58

I was told I wasn't having a big baby despite femur length being 99 centile. 10lb 6oz.

Jb2182 · 13/12/2024 19:59

Yes, I had gestational diabetes and was told baby was going to 10lb+ by all the measurements and not to bother buying any new born stuff, go straight to 0-3 months clothes. She was born at 40+3 and was 6lb 11oz. All the clothes I had absolutely drowned her and had to send my brother out to buy some some for her! Exactly the same happened with second, predicted large baby, she was 6lb 10oz.

SootherSue · 13/12/2024 20:01

Yep! Told 98th centile. Had to have an early delivery regardless so opted for a section. He came out 7lb 15oz at 39+3 weeks. But I also have a friend who was never told to expect a big baby and wound up with a 10 pounder and a traumatic natural birth, so it goes both ways.

Landlubber2019 · 13/12/2024 20:02

I had a big baby forecast, growth scan suggested 7-8lb so proceeded with natural birth. Delivered a 10lb baby 2 weeks early, had shoulder dystocia. Baby was born with erbs palsy. X-ray confirmed no broken bones for baby and 6 months of physio resolved muscle weakness. I have a prolapse and significant internal nerve damage. Husband remains traumatised and won't discuss babies being born or watch anything to do with birthday on TV. Baby is now a teenager.

I am sure you will find some reassurance from posters to say it will be fine ... But having experienced shoulder dystocia I would err on the side of caution....

HEIHEI23 · 13/12/2024 20:03

Yes was told 92nd centile at 32 weeks then he dropped to 75th centile at 36 weeks so was so worried. He ended up coming 2 weeks early at 7lb8 so a completely average size baby! Also to reassure you, I had an elective c section and it was a really positive experience. I would 100% do it again if we have another one.

30percent · 13/12/2024 20:08

Yup was told my eldest would be over 9lbs.
He was a week late and still only 6.8lbs. I'm short thin and was very young so not sure why they even thought that

MammaTo · 13/12/2024 20:09

I was told to expect a 9lb baby and he was 7lb when he was born.

avaritablevampire · 13/12/2024 20:12

Yes, warned my first would be big, she was over cooked too, but under 7lb.
Was warned second was scanning small, he was a ruddy huffalump just shy of 11lbs! So try not to worry.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 13/12/2024 20:13

I was told 8lbs and he was 10lb 11oz!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 13/12/2024 22:17

I was told I was heading for a 10lb baby. She was 7.12lb

TheSillyGoose · 13/12/2024 22:21

My DS was predicted to be 11lbs + and was born at 7lb 4oz. I was induced at 37 weeks, and whilst I would have preferred a natural birth, I had an amazing experience and did not experience any complications. I had a completely none medicated very active birth so if this is what you're after it is definitely possible with induction!

effy6 · 13/12/2024 22:22

I was told baby was measuring big and after a lot of agonising accepted an induction at 39 weeks. He was 10lb then so it was accurate for me, but I had had regular growth scans since 24 weeks all showing a large baby so I was a bit more confident in them

Latenightreader · 13/12/2024 22:26

Estimated at almost 10lbs, weighed in just under 8lbs. She was very long (is still tall for her age) but they were convinced she'd be huge and kept testing me for gestational diabetes. Leg bone length confused them apparently.
