Episiotomy- how did it affect your next childbirth?

I am expecting my second baby.

With my first I required an Episiotomy.

Just wondering those mums who’ve had this and gone on to have another, how did your labour go? Did the scar reopen? Did you need another Episiotomy?

I had an episiotomy with my first. 12 months later I had surgery to refashion as it was too tight. Got pregnant 12 months later and then I tore when I had my second. This healed amazingly and it's better than ever now.

Patty101 · 09/01/2025 22:22

Episiotomy with 1st, then nothing needed 3 years later with 2nd. I was terrified of needing another episiotomy with my 2nd because the healing of that the first time round was the worst part about the whole pregnancy/birth experience, but thankfully there were no tears either.

Missloulouxxx · 15/11/2025 17:34

Do they stich up the tear?

I had a horrible episiotomy with my first that took ages to heal and then healed incorrectly and I needed a surgery to fix it 9 months PP.
I was so scared about having my second but all was well. I had a 2nd degree tear but no episiotomy needed and the tear healed so quickly. Completely different experience

Did they s Stitch the tear up?

CrikeyMajikey · 15/11/2025 17:45

Had a 9cm episiotomy with my first, healed perfectly and no pain at all. No cuts or tears with second but it hurt like hell afterwards and I couldn’t sit down for 10 days. I’d take the episiotomy every time.

(As an aside, since DC1 and may be the episiotomy, my farts have changed direction.)

Blingismything · 15/11/2025 18:28

I had a second one, my baby had to be born in a hurry as her cord was wrapped firmly around her neck and shoulder/arm so no ‘give’! A quick episiotomy (with no anaesthetic!) the cord was cut whilst she was still in the birth canal and she whizzed out!

jill5676 · 15/11/2025 18:34

I really worried about this but it was fine - second birth I had one small tear which needed a stitch, but it was nowhere near the episiotomy scar.

ButtonMushrooms · 15/11/2025 18:39

I had an episiotomy with my first, but didn't need one with my second or third births.

TransAdmiralsAreAdmirals · 16/11/2025 00:17

Serious episiotomy during first birth. No issues at all with second birth, three years later, bigger baby. Best of luck, OP.

Bluebella27 · 16/11/2025 02:14

Had absolutely zero impact on my next labour at all, actually didn’t even cross my mind that by having one in my first birth there could be any issues with my next one? Have had 3 babies and only needed an episiotomy after my first xx

CulinaryPumpkin · 17/11/2025 21:24

It made no difference. I had a small tear with my second which healed so much more quickly and painlessly than the episiotomy did.

Justwanttobebythesea · 17/11/2025 21:28

Requested a c section 2nd birth and got it. I wasn’t taking any chances

JungleRun21 · 18/11/2025 22:40

Episiotomy for my first birth due to babys heart rate dropping dramatically and needing tonget ger out fast.
The suffered a bad haemorrhage and needed the crash team.

Second birth was very quick and didnt make it to the hospital. Had a small 2nd degree tear which needed a couple of stitches.
The recovery from this was less than 2 weeks and so much easier to manage in comparison.

platinumanddiamonds · 18/11/2025 22:42

No problem.
i had an episiotomy after first. Then had two with no problem.

DelurkingAJ · 18/11/2025 22:46

Episiotomy for DS1 (dragged out with forceps, narrowly avoiding a crash section). Sewn up very tight. Cut in exactly the same spot by the lovely midwife when DS2 wasn’t coming out quite fast enough…asked for less tight stitches and she sighed and said ‘I take it a man sewed you up, then?’. No issues with healing either time.

Mumsgirls · 18/11/2025 22:50

Old school so had routine episiotomy for first 6 pound baby. 4 years later delivered 7 pound baby , no cut or tear or stitches, no effects on previous wound.

WonderingWanda · 18/11/2025 22:50

Had an episiotomy which then tore...almost 4th degree with the first. Took an age to heal. 3 years later with number two, very easy birth in comparison, tiny tear but in a different place and only really because I pushed when I wasn't meant to. Original scar was fine.

IntrinsicWorth · 18/11/2025 22:54

No negative impact whatsoever.

Really big episiotomy and instrumental birth with first baby, needing extensive internal and external sutures.

DC2 massive and in a hurry, not even a graze. Sent home within 12 hours.

DemonsandMosquitoes · 19/11/2025 08:13

I had an episiotomy and a second degree tear with my first. A second degree tear with my second.
It’s all a bit of a blur tbh. Healed fine.

sunkissedandwarm · 19/11/2025 08:18

Episiotomy with my first. All other babies born at home. Second no tears or anything. Third I had a tiny tear along the episiotomy scar, but no stitches needed. Subsequent babies no tearing or anything.

NormaNormalPants · 22/11/2025 01:39

I was worried about this before my second, and absolutely needn’t have been as it had zero impact. I did end up with a 2nd degree internal tear but that was down to DS’s speedy entry into the world (1hr 1min from start to finish Confused) and the fact he apparently entered into the world like superman 🙈😂
