Homebirths-the risks compared to hospitals?

Im only 8wks pg but pretty sure i want a hb this time. Dh is not keen as he thinks risks are increased. What things can go wrong and can they be dealt with as well as in hospital?

Is it just the medical risks your DH is worried about? Or is he also concerned about mess or noise? On the mess point, those vinyl backed tablecloths (the ones with jolly pictures of fruit or cheese) are ideal, with some towelling as well just in case. As for noise, I worried about that myself before DS2 was born but it really wasn't an issue.

Another concern to which he might not entirely be admitting is the effect of the birth on your other children - to which the answer is to make arrangements on childcare in case the birth doesn't happen at a convenient time. DS2 was born at 5.50am while DS1 was in bed asleep. DS3 was less obliging, and I had to ask a friend to take DS1 and DS2 for a few hours after school. Actually, this could be a point in favour of home birth - a hospital birth would involve rather more disruption for your children.
