An induction with GBS is it any different

So I am going in tomorrow to be induced and was wondering has anyone else been induced with GBS and is it any different?

I was induced last time so I know the standard route but was wondering as I have GBS this time do they put you on the antibiotics as soon as they start the induction?

Ignore last post

If you have no other risk factor (i.e. labour before 37 weeks, PROM etc) apart from a known positive status you don't have to have the antibiotics. You can just montior the baby and baby's temp for 24 hours after birth.

I was given Antibiotics at the start of induction and every 4 hours from that point on. My hospital also made me have a continous monitoring with no moving off my back and continous drip as well. But I understand that you can refuse or moderate these things and insist on moving around or no monitoring or whatever (I knew nothing last time)

Hope it goes well and quickly

I was induced at 38 weeks. They waited until I was in established labour before siting the venflon and giving me antibiotics. I actually had to insist that I didn't have 4 hours left so they'd better get on with it! Didn't have to have continuous monitoring though.

Somethimg I'm thinking about for next time (in about 6 weeks!) is asking for the venflon to be removed - even though re-siting it isn't very nice, having a venflon in your hand is more inhibiting than you might expect. It was obviously LOADS better than having a drip but nontheless I couldn't weight bear on my hand or do anything with it really.

Agree with previous post about the guildlines on GBS. In the absence of any other risk factors you should be OFFERED abs, but they should not be recommended.

Gopod luck!

i had IV antibiotics and was also induced (as waters broke at 36wks but baby was a no-show - they induced me 7 days later). It made no difference to me as was on a continuous drip anyway, which was a PITA but not unbearable. They gave me antibiotics throughout the labour, 3 doses in the end and started the first one pretty much from the off, if I remember.

I did insist (and my hospital was very supportive of) moving around, not lying on the bed etc. In fact, I spent no time in bed at all as found it too painful. Lots of hospitals try and confine you when you have a continuous drip and have continuous fetal monitoring but there's no medical reason why you shouldn't (it's just easier for the hospital to manage).

Would second Rolf, ie. asking them to remove canula if you're not on a drip otherwise, as it does make the hand that it's in painful. I had to wait until ages after I'd given birth 'in case we need to use it' (um, what for??) and had to threaten to take it out myself before they did!! But the relief... !!

Good luck with the birth xx

Gosh, I'd forgotten that - I had mine taken out after delivery but another one put in a few hours later as it looked as though I was going to have a PPH (I did). It made it really difficult to pick up DD.

Thanks for letting me know your experiences I have had GBS in my urine last week as well as a test at 35 weeks coming back positive -so will be having the antibiotics i really dont want to risk it. I went into early labour (well they thought it was) at 36 weeks and they gave me the antibiotics then they were quite happy for me to move about with it just monitored me for half an hour at first its just the induction bit with the antibiotic that puzzled me By this time tomorrow I hope it will all be over I know what you mean about the canula I have really crap vains and it took three attempts to get it in last time so I think once its in its staying in or I will end up like a pin cushion!
