So last night at 28+3 my waters completely broke
I've been in hospital all night and I've had some period/back ache but nothing major
I've been given steroids and antibiotics and baby is moving so she seems happy
Anybody else had this or similar?? I don't know if I'm more scared to have her early and be in the NICU or to be sent home after 48 hours if I don't go into labour 😬

Hi, I had this at 27 weeks with my DS1.

They told me I'd probably go into labour straight away but I didn't.. it was the most terrifying time of my life I'll always remember the drive to hospital thinking I must have lost him.

In my case he held on in there for 2 weeks. One of the weeks they kept me as an inpatient in hospital, the next week they let me go home as long as I monitored my temperature every few hours for signs of infection.

I ended up going into labour spontaneously at 28 + 6. He had a stay in the NICU obviously, but is fine now at age 6 🥰

Omg thanks for the reassuring story!
I don't feel like I'll go into labour tbh but who knows and if I haven't by tomorrow they will send me home with antibiotics and monitor me as an outpatient for infections etc
It's terrifying isn't it, I don't even remember the drive in I was so scared too!💖

I had this a little later at 33+6 and similar to you they told me if i don't go into labour within 48 hours they will release me and give me oral antibioitcs and monitor me every 2-3 days. i didn't have steroids though due to other medical issues. i actually did go into labour 44 hours later and had her bang on the 48 hour mark. thankfully all healthy.

My doctor told me, though no medical evidence, but in her experience if the waters go and then stop then likelihood is baby will hang in there for a while. if they go and continue to go baby is usually here within 72 hours, a week at the latest.

At 28 weeks though you will likely have a long nicu stay ahead but chances of survival are good - especially with steroids, so try and take each day and keep them there as long as possible

How are you getting on, @Hannah4850 ?

I really recommend the Facebook group "Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) support".

My waters went with bleeding at 28+2 and I gave birth 4 weeks ago at 36+4. I remember how scared I was at 28 weeks and how it felt like there was a long journey ahead of me that I just wanted to fast forward.

My waters resealed and I was able to go home and the things I did were:

  • Bed rest for three weeks (2 of those were in hospital though)
  • Slowly got back to normal-ish activity levels but I avoided too much walking and I didn't do any heavy lifting (so no picking up my kids)
  • No sex, swimming or baths
  • I didn't go too far away from the hospital in case I needed to go back in a hurry
  • I bought a doppler to monitor the baby's heart rate at home. I found this massively anxiety inducing but I was so worried about missing an infection that I would occasionally check her heart rate just to reassure myself. I also monitored my temperature.

I hope you and your baby are doing well.
