Are there any differences?

The experiences for me were a million miles apart. Hated being induced, dreadful experience for me (and ds1). I have never been so terrified in my life. Went into labour spontaneously with ds2 (albeit early) and it was a breeze in comparison.

SmugColditz · 22/04/2008 16:44

Oh yes, big time.

First labour was 42 hours from waters breaking to feet coming out, and I was induced, had epidural, felt no natural urge to push

Second labour started itself, 4.5 hours second stage, and I didn't feel like I'd been kicked repeatedly all over by an infuriated mule.

SmugColditz · 22/04/2008 16:44

Yup, second one was a breeze in comparison. When I think of labourt, i think of ds1's!

dustystar · 22/04/2008 16:45

I went into labour with dd spontaneously and whilst it was quite a long labour it was a much better experience than my subsequent induced labour with ds

Blocky · 22/04/2008 18:38

Induced with ds1, epidural problems, horrendous, literally put me off for years.
Ds2 3 hour labour, G&A, waterbirth - so so much better than my first.

repeat what everyone says, ds1, was induced at 42 weeks, not a long labour but just very un enjoyable!
Ds2 had sweep at 40 weeks - he came at 40+5, had homebirth with just gas and air, 6 hours long! loved every minute of it!

2point4kids · 22/04/2008 18:50

DS1 was induced and was a long hard 12 hour stint.
DS2 I went naturally and it was a complete breeze. 4 hours start to finish and so much easier than the first time!
Felt better much quicker afterwards too.

Good luck with your no 2!

merryberry · 22/04/2008 18:53

ds1 induced on due date when i was really unready. 3 day labour. vaginal birth, by a miracle, with epidural and gas and air.

ds2 10 days late, after 19 days of pre-labour hell, used tens machine last day. actual labour (2nd stage) just 4 hours. also vaginal birth, gas and air and water.

merryberry · 22/04/2008 18:53

sorry yes, amazing fast recovery with ds2.

cluelessnchaos · 22/04/2008 18:57

Different story here,

spontaneous delivery with dd1
induced very overdue with dd2
spontaneous even more overdue with ds

the induced dd2 was by far the easiest most enjoyable labour, I think it had more to do with being 1st/2nd child, and plus I was more than ready when they started me off, ds was fine but he was huge so it took for ages. Gas and air for dd2 and ds , but the works for dd1.

No 1 was terrified forced coerced into induction as it was just before xmas and I think they wanted to keep xmas day babies down to a minimum. They told me my waters were leaking and it might be dangerous for baby. I believed them. Horrendous 27 hours - ds (8lbs 9oz) did not wish to come out, spent hours spinning rather than progressing down, epudirals, forceps, stitches etc etc. Horrid experience.

No2, realised I was in labour, bang on due date, had a bath, made breakkie, woke dh, bimbled along to hospital when contractions reached 4 mins apart. ds2 born 5 hours' later, no interventions, gas air and a lot of swearing.
Worlds apart....

broguemum · 22/04/2008 19:35

First labour - induced at 37 weeks. Why? Because I was a fool and trusted my doctor and her motives..... Turned out she was going on holiday for two weeks the following week and I guess she didn't want to miss out on her fee. The labour was horrendous. The induction was done with the drip straight away. It took 8 hours with ARM after 4 hours after which contractions started to really hurt. There were 4 failed attempts at an epidural, 2 tears and lots of stitches. DD was v. poorly and spent 6 days in neonatal and we spent 10 days in hospital altogether, 6 days of which I had a severe spinal headache. DD had v. bad jaundice and lost over a quarter of her birth weight in the first week.

Second labour was spontaneous at 40 + 1. Waters broke at 22.15. Didn't feel a single contraction but tottled off to the clinic since I was a strep B carrier. Got hooked up to the antibiotics, MW checked me was already 5 cm dilated. Contractions started coming thick and fast, had an epidural (which slowed things down I think). DS born at 01.30 40 + 2. All in all a much better labour.

Best of luck!

This is fascinating, thank you. I have two DC already, both were induced (+10 and +11) and I was fine about it, first stage with both was loooong, but both were born without intervention so I was happy to be induced again.

I was curious as to what a "normal" birth felt like and why people wanted to "hang on" rather than be induced.

MW at local MW unit said that if I go over agian they will do a sweep at 7 days and 10 days - really got me going with DS so hopefully will do the trick without the bloody awful gel etc!

Thank you very much for the replies.

Hiya,

My first son was 14 days overdue when I was induced. I had gel and 6 hours later my contractions started. The first was as bad as the last and it was a shock, I was vomiting ect..

The labour was 5.5 hours and he was 9lbs. I had some bad tearing.

With DS I was niggle from 38 weeks, the day before my duedate at 9pm labour started,

I laboured at home in a birthingpool and 5.5 hours later DS2 was bornin in the pool, 7lb11.

Very differnt births but I think it was more because I manged a HB 2nd time round, I didn't want to be in hospital at all.

Am planning another HB this time too

mosschops30 · 22/04/2008 20:36

first labour with dd was spontaneous and a long painful affair of 25 hours and I thought i would die

2nd labour with ds was induced and was altogether quicker at 6 or so hours.

Pain was pretty much the same IIRC but better managed with 2nd labour. Both were very easy 2nd stage, dd about 10 minutes and ds about 4 seconds

broguemum · 22/04/2008 20:44

I think (and this is just my opinion and not backed up by anything other than a most excellent Primitivo) that if you're ripe and ready to go the induction is less invasive / traumatic. If however baby isn't fully cooked (so to speak) then inductions can be more difficult. I have a friend who went 40 + 3, 6 and 10 with her children and her induced labours were all OK. My induced labour at 37 weeks was not OK at all. However, this is just my opinion and I might be told to hush my mouth for speaking out of turn .

mom2latinoboys · 24/04/2008 23:50

I was induced at 38 weeks with ds1. It was fine. The induction was a total of 12 hours but I didn't feel any contractions until about 6 hours into it.

My natural labor was a little different, but not any more or less painful. DS2 came at 39+4.

LyraSilvertongue · 24/04/2008 23:52

I as induced with DS1 because my waters had broken 48 hours earlier. Ended up with emergency CS.
Not induced with DS2 but ended up with traumatic ventouse delivery.
I'm not out out for childbirth

ImightbeLulumama · 25/04/2008 05:16

my spontaneous labour was far more copeable with than my induced one. it was a slow build up and although it was painful, i managed with gas & air and a little pethidine. i was also far more aware of how i wanted things to go , having had an em c.s first time, and i was far more educated and knowledgeable and that helped a lot too.
first labour induced with ARM and drip, totally immobile for the whole time, had diamorphine and an epidural, never got past 2-3 cm, baby not descending, and my wee was full of blood, so whipped me into theatre.
second time, 15 hour latent stage, MW made me move with the ctx, and took gas & air off me, had one hour of hideous pain, then i was 3 cm after 15 hours of latent labour.... had some pethidine, and DD born 3 1/4 hours later, no intervention at all.
