Queen Charlottes - QCCH & Stanley Clayton postnatal care

I’m due to have my next baby by c-section at QCCH (NHS). Last time I was there I was on the general ward on the first night. It was the pandemic so private rooms were saved for Covid positive patients. No overnight visitors were allowed. It was a really awful night for me as the midwives were rushed off their feet, babies were crying all night so I could barely sleep and my baby needed several nappy changes which the midwives barely had time for (not a criticism of them) and I was just a few hours post surgery so not really mobile enough yet for nappy changes. I did my best and we muddled through but it’s not an experience I want to repeat.

So this time it seems wise given there’s an option to upgrade to the Stanley Clayton ward for a private room. I am interested in others’ experiences of overnight care in this part of the hospital. Is it just a private room or are there more midwives to help too? I am not necessarily interested in the nursery specifically as my instincts are not to let my babies out of my sight so I wouldn’t find having them in a separate room to be relaxing. However, will I be fine to send DH home to our other children and feel reasonably taken care of in this ward?

I had to stay on the post natal ward at an NHS hospital when DS was 10 days old (and I was already pretty mobile) and it was horrendous.

If you have the option to upgrade to the Stanley Clayton ward, I would HIGHLY recommend it. It's only 5 or 6 private rooms and at least 2-3 midwives on shift at all times, plus some assistants. I had DS there, and planning to have DD there in December as well. It's so calm and you have your baby with you in the room at all times. DH also had a pull out couch to sleep in. Not the most comfortable tbh, but better than a hard plastic chair!
