Failed Induction - waiting days for c section

Has anyone else had a failed induction. I’ve been in hospital for a week and tried all induction methods offered - but not dilated at all. Now being starved from midnight, prepped for surgery each day and waiting in room all day for c section. Today is going to be the third time but been told today and tomorrow are skeleton staff so unlikely but they want me ready just incase. They’ve said it’s against medical advice to leave the hospital. Has anyone else had this? How many days have you had to wait after a failed induction?

You poor thing- exactly a year ago I went in for induction for baby no2 and it did eventually work in that they managed to break my waters after several days but I didn't dilate at all from the pessaries etc and it was soul destroying. I also had to wait an extra day for them to attempt to break my waters due to lack of staff.

I don't have any advice really but just sending solidarity as I know how insane this whole process can make you feel. Fingers crossed you are taken for your c section very soon!!

I know it is not as you thought it may be but as long as you are being monitored, you both should be ok.

I had several failed attempts during my first pregnancy, even my waters didn't break! After 4 days of continual action I was now 14 days over my due date and at that point they then suggested c section. Going over the 14 days was risky healthwise as I was told the placenta starts to detoriate (me and baby were in excellent general health).

So late on the 14th overdue date (saturday) they took me in for a c section and all.was well.

The waiting and now knowing is the hardest part but keep your spirits up and try to rest. Lots of lovely moments to look forward to!

Oh my goodness this is so horrendous. I had to wait in hospital for 3 days to be induced which was bad enough, but a week??

the only advice I can give you is what I was told, which is if you go in to labour naturally you basically skip the queue! I was told to do lots of bouncing on a ball, walking up and down stairs, going for walks, in an attempt to go in to labour. Didn’t work for me unfortunately but might for you?

why are you being induced in the first place?

Magiccarpetforsale · 10/08/2024 11:12

Poor you, this is awful. Really really unfair on you. It’s a ridiculous system, how is anyone supposed to go into labour when so stressed from the uncertainty, sleep deprived from being on the ward etc. Not to mention if you have other children waiting at home!

Who is your support at the hospital? They need to be pushing really hard for you to get your C-Section. It’s so easy for the midwives to say “computer says no” and when they see it every day I think they become desensitised to the waiting around. And don’t see the effects it can have on someones mental health.

It sounds bad but it was only when I cried my eyes out at the head nurse did I get any movement (though mine was the other end, trying to get discharged and had been waiting 2 days - they kept losing my blood results and having to redo them!)

How many weeks are you and what was the reason for induction? Depending on that they might be being negligent to now just leave you waiting this long ?

RebeccaJD · 10/08/2024 15:17

Thank you. I’m 41 weeks now and was told by consultant that because it was an ivf pregnancy and had quite a bit of bleeding it would be the safest option for the baby.

But the baby is fine and I just feel trapped and silly for being here. I’m not allowed to leave my curtained bit of the room (not that I want to in a surgical gown 😂) incase the dr comes and I don’t get any food or updates. When they give up, the dinner trolley has passed so they can get me a sandwich.

Logically, they could not classify me as an emergency, book me in an elective slot and send me home where I’d have a decent chance of going into labor before then. But they won’t cause I failed the induction I’m classed as an emergency but I’m not an emergency so I don’t get any of the emergency slots and I’m stuck in limbo. It makes no sense to me.

My husband is getting annoyed but then tries to stay calm cause he doesn’t want to upset me. I think he might explode if it comes to Monday.

Did they break your waters? If not then you can go home. I understand the policy but u leas there is a risk of infection (waters being broke) then you should be able to leave. You can.

RebeccaJD · 10/08/2024 18:01

MixedCouple2

Thank you. I asked them about this and the consultant has agreed I can go home overnight while surgery is closed if all my readings continue to be normal. It’s going to be a massive respite!

My 2 year old was a failed induction but I went on the emergency c section list (category c so not really an emergency) as they were inducing me early for suspected slow growth. They tried 2 pessaries and some kind of balloon before I refused any further attempts (it had been 3 days, I had hyperemesis, no sleep and another young child at home). This was the Wednesday and they got me in Thursday afternoon. I was very lucky though, they brought in an extra midwife on her day off so I could go down to theatre as they need 2 in there and didn't have enough on shift.
The starving after midnight was torture. You have my utmost sympathy. The end is in sight, hang on and soon enough you'll have your baby in your arms and the mad maternal part of your brain will convince you it wasn't all that bad and was in fact, worth every miserable second.

Imisscoffee2021 · 10/08/2024 18:18

I had a successful induction but then consultantt strike so wouldnt transfer me at night (why induce me then!?)no room in labour ward next day so held there for 3 days...awful. Then failed epidural, 8 hours labour to only 3cm, distressed baby so emergency section. I had told them he was huge and told them he's back to back but they didn't do a positional scan so missed he was so jammed there his head wasn't even on my cervix and he couldnt turn at all, should have had a section earlier.

So sorry for what you've been through, no rest whatsoever in hospital so going home seems best bet and an elective? Having an emergency one after 4 or 5 days no sleep then bringing home a newborn didn't help the blues for me so resting up would be best before an elective, really hope you get sorted soon and congratulations on imminent arrival :)

My sister is currently in hospital and has been for the past three days (induction due to gestational diabetes) , they tried multiple doses of the prostine gel, even tried to manually break her waters and nothing!
After three days she had to go through C-sec and her baby girl is healthy, (she is extremely exhausted and never really seen her this badly)!
