Birth after secondary postpartum haemorrhage

Hi all. Just wanted to know if anyone has any positive stories or help/advice about giving birth after having a secondary postpartum haemorrhage

Just a little context.. I had a pph on my second birth <1L this was in 2017. I then went on to have my third baby, June 2023. 10 days postpartum I had a secondary postpartum haemorrhage over 3L loss, ended up being rushed into theatre, put under local anaesthetic and resulted in having the bakri balloon to stop the bleeding.

Please does anyone have any advice or tips to somehow try my best to prevent another pph for my next birth?

I've not suffered that. It sounds quite traumatic @amxlia. Are you just considering having another baby or are you PG now?

Been told I am pregnant at my appointment to fit the coil in! So it was not exactly a planned pregnancy….

You need to speak to your midwife, and possibly a consultant, if they put you under consultant led care.

I have had ( immediate, so not the same as your secondary pph) pph in my first two pregnancies. With the third , I was given an injection to prevent it happening.

You need to discuss medically what can be done to prevent this happening again and have a plan in the event does. All your caregivers need to be aware of these plans.

Thank you for the helpful advice! Can I ask how your third birth went with having the injection? Was it any better?

What a huge shock for you. Do you now how far along you are?

I had a 2l pph after my first birth, was one of the reasons I had an ELCS with my second. I was high risk so went in first of the day, with bloods ready in case it happened again. I lost much less and it was a much, much more pleasant experience.

I didn't have a pph the time I had the injection.

I was supposed to have the injection in my 2nd labour but everything happened too quickly, and I'd started hemorrhaging before the midwife could give the injection. My pph happened after delivery of baby , but prior to delivery of placenta.

I was anxious after dc3's birth in case a secondary pph happened a little while later.

Do you think having a ELCS played a part in reducing your risk of having another PPH? I’ve had 3 natural births so I have considered this an option if it reduces my risk..
Its nice to hear you had a more pleasant experience though!

you probably need to have a conversation with your MW/obstetrician to find out what caused the bleeds if you don’t already know. Not all of the causes are things that are likely to recur and for the ones that may recur things can often be done differently to reduce the risk or to manage bleeding more aggressively. Re the secondary PPH, that probably needs to be counted separately (they’re often due to different things than the primary PPHs). A c-section doesn’t always reduce the risk of a PPH (primary or secondary) either. Best bet is to find out what risk factors apply to you, how they can manage those differently and what the risks vs benefits are of the different options in the context of your general health. HTH.

Oh thats good to hear that the injection worked for you! Thanks for sharing this, will definitely be mentioning it to my MW

Thank you so much for the helpful advice, will definitely be mentioning all of these points!
And yes the secondary PPH was due to some retained placenta, so hopefully this wont be the case next time

I have a DF who had it with all 4 but after the 2nd she was kept in for observation longer and was consultant led and monitored very closely.
