Forceps and 3rd/ 4th degree tears

I had my son nearly a year ago. I ended up having forceps, an episiotomy and sustained a 3b tear. It’s taken me nearly a year to feel somewhat normal.

I’ve just come across an article that said mums who have forceps are more likely to develop fecal incontinence as they get older! I’m absolutely petrified of ending up in a nappy like a lovely colorectal doctor told me could happen 🥲 if you know someone or are someone who had a bad tear and forceps please let me know this didn’t happen x

Hi I had forceps, episiotomy and a third degree tear. A year on, it didn’t feel normal yet. Three years on I complained that the episiotomy had left scar tissue over my vaginal opening so I had something called a Fenton’s procedure to trim it, that worked well but I still have a little blob of scar tissue by my anus (sorry TMI). I did feel that I felt that if I needed to poo 💩 I had to do it NOW so I went to Gp, she referred Me to a lovely consultant, and they tested my ability to ‘hold on’ by popping a balloon up! Which was fine the nurse was lovely. Its ok …. I’ve never actually had an accident (DS is 18 now) but I’ve learned to go as soon as I feel the urge and not try to leave it. Sadly this sometimes means having a poo at work :/(x definitely do your exercises. Make sure you eat a lot of fibre and drink water. But it’s nowhere near as bad as you might have been led to believe.

Oh wow I’m so sorry you needed another procedure! As if the tear wasn’t bad enough 😢

Im glad all is ok with you though!

I didn’t have the balloon but I’ve had a camera up there 🙈 I wanted to check I was repaired correctly rather than leaving it til years later potentially needing surgery and I’m glad I did it soon rather than later as it would just play on my mind.

I was never a fan of pooing in public bathrooms but now I’ve come to terms with I do it in the public bathroom or in my pants 🤣

I think we all get told the worst case things and having anxiety my mind automatically thinks of the worst case scenarios! X

Oh op I feel for you, my friend is going through the same thing. She had a 3rd degree tear and is still struggling 7 years on from the birth. She's not totally incontinent but needs to go places where bathrooms are close by or she will have accidents.

@papadontpreach2me
so sorry to hear about your friend 😢🩷
it’s horrible what can happen from childbirth.
I try and go to the bathroom before leaving the house so I know I’m ok. I have purchased a radar key you can get them from Amazon if your friend doesn’t have one already. It makes me feel better knowing I’ve got something if needs be x

I didn't have a forceps birth, but had a 3b tear 8 years ago due to baby coming out very fast.
I was told I would be incontinent but actually healed well after being sewn back up and have never had a problem.

@Quackajack

wow they actually told you that? How awful.
I haven’t had a problem since around 4 months I think? I mostly think it’s anxiety about what could possibly happen if I don’t go to the bathroom within a certain amount of time and worrying about old age x

I had forceps in theatre just over a year ago and I've gone the other way! It's really difficult for me to go to the toilet & when I do it's like passing glass.

Being a woman really sucks sometimes doesn't it!
Get the Squeezy app and work on the pelvic floor! X
