Baby Oxygen Deprivation

I wasn’t sure where to put this, but my friend had her baby girl a few days ago, the baby got stuck and they think she has been oxygen deprived. She had a brain activity test which was inconclusive. Does anyone know what this means and what they would have been testing for? What does inconclusive mean? I’m really worried but don’t want to ask my friend too much as she is obviously going through a lot right now.

I guess baby is so young it's difficult to determine the extent that oxygen deprivation would have in the baby. Could be nothing. Could be very significant.

Your friend will have had all of this explained to her in the NICU. If she hasn’t told you then she doesn’t want to share.

How awful for your friend, and for you as her friend :(

They will be testing to see if there's any brain damage. Something like cerebral palsy can be caused by a lack of oxygen during birth so my guess is it's that they're testing for xx

Oxygen deprivation can cause brain damage that can cause a wide range of issues often all under the banner of Cerebral Palsy.

We had this when my DD was born.

They can test tiny babies and may see if there is catastrophic damage, that can be more obvious to spot.

In other cases, including ours, tests are inconclusive, so the message is to wait and see what happens. Which is pretty terrifying, but they cannot predict exactly how a child will develop.

They can do other specific tests on eyesight and hearing but again, some results will show clear damage and others will be inconclusive so you have to wait.

It wasn't explained very clearly to us tbh, we just kept being told we dont know for sure, don't panic, wait and see.
