when i had my last child i was so scared by the pain that i over sucked the gas and air it did'nt do anything for the pain.
afterwards i had bad chest pains and was even sent for a chest x ray.doctors said i had bruised my lungs what with that and a sore fanny it was'nt the best experience.

I did but not with this result - I hallucinated.

MamaG · 11/04/2008 12:05

I hated gas and air - one suck made me queasy so I didn't use it.

Tried it with DS (second baby), but as soon as I got the thing in my hand, i chucked it back at thte MW shrieking "I just remember i hate this!"

I was very tetchy giving birth to ds

Ambi · 11/04/2008 12:09

yes, just put on your other thread, vomited twice, lovely! Told to ease off it then.

3kidsisquiteenuff · 11/04/2008 13:46

it really is a useless drug in my opinion and it made my voice sound like a mans!!
my husband was laughing not what you want to hear when your in awful pain

I hallucinated too.

It was amazing.

The only reason I got pregnant again!!

Tutter · 11/04/2008 13:52

i love the stuff

but with ds1 i didn't realise you were only supposed to use it during contractions and was chugging away most of the time

was off my face plus did throw up a couple of times

(but it was worth it )

Ecmo · 11/04/2008 13:54

I had so much it ran out... they had to send for another bottle but I'd given birth by the time it came! I thought the midwife was joking when she said it had run out!

FAWKEOFF · 11/04/2008 13:56

i love the bloody stuff...untill you get to the stage in albour where it does eff all for you.....you can be crying one minute then laughing hysterically.....love it

NineUnlikelyTales · 11/04/2008 13:57

I had far too much and was chugging away all the time like you Tutter! I had the idea that it would help with the contractions if I never let the effect wear off It was a rubbish idea as it made me have no idea what was going on and even les able to cope with it. Plus I thought the room had exploded.

lillypie · 11/04/2008 13:57

I hallucinated too.I was in a golden room with a man putting a crown on my head

CarGirl · 11/04/2008 13:58

I love the stuff but there is definately a knack to using it effectively for pain relief, you have to start sucking as soon as the contraction starts and then stop as it peaks so you get a break in between.

3kidsisquiteenuff · 11/04/2008 14:00

so it seems im deffinatly out numbered then well i should of known i would have to have horse tranquillisers to knock me out

didn't stop pain for me either - but made things more entertaining!

terramum · 11/04/2008 14:30

Couldn't get enough of the stuff - went through 2 mini cannisters at home and after the broke my waters at the hospital breathed nothing but for 4 hours & used up a whole HUGE cannister!

TheFallenMadonna · 11/04/2008 14:34

I also hallucinated. IMO, it doesn't dull the pain, it just stops you caring about it quite so much...

I know there are lots of downsides to it, but in my first labour I was continuously monitored, and I actually found this helped with the gas and air monitoring. I could see from the trace when the contraction was about to start and would start to breathe it in then. By the time the contraction reached its peak I could remove the mouthpiece and have a break.

It was harder to get the timings right in my second (easier ) labour, because I tended to start each round a bit later. I only hallucinaed the second time around.

Beeper · 11/04/2008 15:49

If possible I would keep a cannister at the side of the couch for general use when watching TV or a movie. Its good stuff. Only bested by the four shots of morphine after my CS. From pain to Lala land in one easy needle.

And no I am not a druggie - I only indulge at the behest of qaulified medical personnel.

stleger · 11/04/2008 16:08

I found the mask better than the stick you suck. If the mask is available go for it!

mylovelymonster · 11/04/2008 16:09

I had sore ribs for a few days after too

My friend used 18 bottles of gas and air at home before being transferred to hospital.

She lost the plot, was hallucinating, and remembers pretty much nothing about the birth.

I was fairly amazed that the midwives let her have so much.

Sazisi · 11/04/2008 16:20

I didn't get sore lungs or hallucinate, but I do think it didn't help, and actually distracted me in a way that wasn't helpful. I think it slowed down my contrcations. I had a lot for the first two births, none for the last and I was much more focused and the labour progressed more steadily.

Sazisi · 11/04/2008 16:20

18

TsarChasm · 11/04/2008 16:23

If only they sent round a regular supply for the following years. I could do with some from time to time nowadays 9 years down the line

I loved it - I had pressured speech, talked rubbish throughout, threw up once and laughed like a hyena. mw and dh just kept exchanging glances but I'm telling you they would have had to call security to get it off me. At one point I muttered vague threats about what I would do if it ran out -no worries apparently it is piped in to our new unit so no cannister to run out.

I would like to start a campaign to have it available at weekends for the general public. Imo it would solve thr binge drinking culture once and for all.
