My son is 4 days old and has spent 4 days in nicu. They can't stabilise his sugars. Everytime we get good readings it's like one step forward two steps back. He is on a drip and being fed through tube. They increase his glucose from 10% to 12% and it seems everytime feeding is introduced his sugars crash. Last readings is back to being too low so they've had to up the iv fluids again. They said it's going on quite a while now and have taken bloods to rule out any congenital issues. I had uncontrolled diabetes in pregnancy . I just feel like we are never going to get him home. If this continues we don't know what the long term solution would be how would this be treated

Oh that sounds miserable, I’m sorry

DD was in for a couple of nights with blood sugar issues after birth. I had GD but controlled with diet. One thing that helped (I think) was expressing colostrum into capped syringes and her having that, seemed to go down better than formula - perhaps you are already doing that though?

Also meant to say, my other daughter was in NICU due to being prem, it is a massive rollercoaster so sending a big hug. Try to take one day at a time and don’t read too much into one setback (easy for me to say I know)

I have an acquaintance who had a baby with congenital hyperinsulinemia. It took a while to get his sugars stable, but they got there in the end. He was on formula and medication to keep his sugars stable, and weaned just fine. Last I heard they'll try to taper down, if not see if he can manage without, the medication as he gets older. He'll be about 18 months old now.
