Anyone else experience this ? I was induced and my labour went very quick in the end I didn't have time for an epidural and probably over did it on the gas and air , I don't remember huge parts of my labour just snippets one upside is I don't remember any pain when pushing/ delivering bit only pushed for maybe 20 minutes or so I'm
Told but I don't remember most of the delivery did anyone else experience memory loss ? I'm clear from after she was born and placed on my chest obviously I had stopped the gas and air at that point.

I’m afraid not. Gas and air just numbed the pain for me and I did not have a quick labour with DS1. You can probably find whether it’s a known side effect online.

I can't remember most of my two labours in much detail, but tbh, they are pretty samey - contractions and then recovering between the contractions.

I remember odd incidents like a fire alarm going off and wondering what it would be like to give birth whilst slung over a fireman's shoulders, or a midwife wheeling in a full length mirror so I could watch the head crowning (fuck no, its bad enough to be doing it without having to watch the business end!)

I don't think anyone actually remembers pain, but you do remember your reactions to it.

Is there a reason you are concerned?

I had a similar bar no induction..progressed quickly so only had gas and air for the contractions. They wouldn't let me have it for the pushing but it was over relatively quickly..I have very little memory of the 3 hours I was having contractions. I was tired as well as middle of the night. Think it's a bit like drinking and drugs or makes it all all hazy. I wouldnt complain lol

No not really concerned as such just find it odd that the parts that would of been the most painful I dont remember at all , might be for the best if I choose to have a second I've nothing to fear 😂

I didn’t have any drugs for either of mine, I think your body blanks it apart for the good bits (first cuddle etc) and the memory very quickly fades and then when you have another you are like oh god I remember this, oh dear god this is going to hurt! I can clearly remember it was only when in labour with #2 at one point I looked at DH and said I can’t do this for 8 hours straight again like last time. Luckily it was quicker and baby safely arrived 45 mins later.

I barely remember any of my DDs birth, it was a long time ago but even straight after I didn't remember however I can't say that I remember every detail of other major occasions either.

I remember it more as watching someone else rather than it happening to me - I did have G&A (until they took it off me) but gave birth effectively with no pain killers and vaguely remember crowning feeling very stingy and having my stomach massaged afterwards the most painful.

I think it's an evolutionary thing, who would have more than one child if they remembered fully.

Exactly!!

Pretty sure it’s an adrenaline/heightened emotion thing - your mind and body are going through so much in the moment it’s impossible to process it all into coherent memory, you remember some bits but there are big empty spots.

Knackeredmommy · 07/07/2024 16:32

I don't remember much of either of my labours, I had gas and air but it made me feel ill so I pushed unaided, I vaguely remember screaming with my DD and my DS being placed on my stomach afterwards. I just thought that was normal, like your body protecting itself from trauma!

I think I can remember what was going on, but can't remember all the conversations that were had in the room, when my husband has mentioned things that were said. I used the gas and air to relieve the pain when I was being stitched and remember feeling more lightheaded from the gas and air than when I was in labour, I think because I was focused and more pain in labour I felt like I didn't notice the effects.

I was high as a kite on gas and air when in my first labou

Dr13Hadley · 07/07/2024 19:35

Sorry. Labour and all I can remember is having imaginary conversations with Gene Hunt from Ashes to Ashes.

I remember it feeling like I'd downed several large vodkas - fantastic! I also remember remarking about the teeth marks on the gas and air nozzle but later realising why they were there. 😖
