Anyone seen a birth where the baby was born in their waters?

My third was born three weeks ago, and my waters never broke. He come out in two quite tiny pushes, and I think the midwife broke his waters once his head was out. Too pre-occupied at the time to think much about it, but I can't really imagine what it must have looked like. I have an image in my mind of him coming out looking like he has a pair of tights on his head!

If any one has seen this happen, I would be intrigued to hear what it looks like.

Thanks.

One of the Mners gave birth recently with the waters intact, she had something like a week of niggly labour!

I think it's "born in the caul"

Thanks - the links are great. I'll adjust my tights over head image to cling film instead.

I'll probably sound quite ignorant now, but is the placenta contained within the sac also? If so, if the midwife hadn't popped the membranes while his head was out, does that mean that the whole thing including placenta would have come out, or would it have been difficult to get him out as the placenta wouldn't have been ready?

My DD1 was bor in her waters, midwife cuts sack open when she appeared, don't remember seeing anything to be honest, completely usless answer. Sorry

MinkyBorage · 10/04/2008 10:53

no placenta not in sac

DaddyJ · 10/04/2008 11:00

Yes, our daughter! And I saw it all..
Actually, that was the only moment during the whole thing
when I was slightly concerned:
a) she did not make a sound
b) she looked like an alien as the caul was blueish
All three midwives looked delighted, though, which was reassuring.

No, the placenta was separate outside the amniotic sac.
