How much are private hospital rooms?

I'm not actually pregnant at the moment but desperatly ttc! I know I will have to have a planned section with my next child (provided I actually manage to get pregnant ) as I had problems during the birth of ds and was told my pelvis is too small to deliver naturally. I ended up on a ward with 2 really rough chavs last time and couldn't wait to get home! As I know I'll be kept in for a good couple of days I'd like to have a bit more privacy. Has anyone paid to get a private room and how much did it cost per day/night? I know I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here!

£35 per night

ScaryHairy · 07/04/2008 15:31

Depends on the hospital.

I'm in London and an amenity room was about £120p.n. IIRC.

A private room (i.e. in the private maternity ward) was more like £400 - £500 p.n..

chubbymummy · 07/04/2008 15:31

Ooohh that's not bad I was expecting to hear they would be much more than that. Thanks for letting me know nailpolish.

£175 per night at my local hospital - they did 3 nights for £450 as a deal for cs patients

Ooops xposted with scaryhairy then - that IS bad!!!!! What's the difference between an amenity room and a private room?

I think if you have a private room, you will also have to pay for a private consultant, although that isn't the case for an amenity room.

I only think.

NatalieJane · 07/04/2008 15:34

With my first it was £25 a night, with my second (different hospitals) it wasn't even an option, but I ended up with a whole ward to myself except for the last 2 hours!

slinkiemalinki · 07/04/2008 15:36

I'm at Chelsea and they will let NHS patients have a room on the private maternity for £750/night which includes full private midwifery care postnatally - you don't need to pay for a doctor too! But if a private patient goes into labour you might get turfed out. But an amenity room is a better deal I am sure!

chubbymummy · 07/04/2008 15:39

An amenity room sounds better but what is it? Is it a single room with a bathroom? Sorry for being thick!

Amenity room is a single room in an NHS ward with NHS staff etc. At most hospitals these can't be pre-booked so there is no guarantee you will get one. At my hospital they wanted the c.s. patients in shared rooms so the other women could alert the staff if you keeled over.

A private room comes with private (i.e. paid for) medical care, unless there are unusual circumstances. Fo example, if your child was in the NICU but you didn't need medical care, they might put you on the private ward so you could get some privacy, but this is not the norm.

Youcannotbeserious · 07/04/2008 15:42

I think (not sure) that the only way to be sure of a private room is to go private which is £400-500 a night (Up to £900 at the Portland!!!!!!)

Not sure if you have to have private care too..........

VictorianSqualor · 07/04/2008 15:44

All depends on the hospital.
At my hospital a private room (more mw per patient and ensuite etc plus decent menu)
is about £150, not sure about an amenity room.

ScaryHairy · 07/04/2008 15:44

yes, CM, single room with an en suite.
Much better than the shared rooms if you can get one.

chubbymummy · 07/04/2008 15:50

Oh well in that case it's an amenity room I'd want not a private one. Doesn't sound like I'd get one though if most don't pre-book and they want cs patients on the wards anyway. Better prepare myself for sharing with a chain smoking 11 year old who rows with her boyfriend the whole time then! (of course I might also be on a ward with some lovely people who become good friends)

My hospital pre-book c section patients and prefer to have them in private rooms as they are usually on drips n catheters and an amenity room reduces risk of infection due to less visitors etc.

You need to speak to your hospital. Where are you? Someone may have experience of your hosp.

minster · 07/04/2008 20:28

Amenity rooms at my local are £190 without a bathroom & £250 en suite.

I was given one gratis last time (post section) and was in for a week. No way could we have afforded it otherwise - I'd have gone insane without it.

mumofk · 08/04/2008 08:25

At my hospital they have 6 or 7 private rooms on the post-natal bit, all ensuite, for c-section ladies. NHS only, no private patients at all, and no facility to pay for private facilities. Everyone else labours, delivers and had post natal care in the 'labour' rooms (i.e. big rooms, the post c-section rooms are just little bedrooms with ensuite shower room). The ward bits are virtually always antenatal pts, with a seperate section used for post natal if needed for overflow!(Both ward bits are 4 beds if IRC).
Basically, it depends on which hospital you end up in (bear in mind, even if you have everything planned for one hospital, you might be away from home if things happen early, or your chosen hospital may be full up).
My sympathies for your experience last time- same thing happened to my pal-she didn't dare go to the loo or get cleaned up until DH visited, coz the nurses/midwives said to ask another new mum to watch your baby, and the ladies she was in with were not suitable for that!
I'd ring up the maternity ward where you'd want to be and check out their facilities- they can tell you the most! By the time you'll be needing them (hope conceiving works out easier than you think) they won't even remember you calling!

laura032004 · 08/04/2008 08:31

With DS1 the hospital would normally give private rooms to c/s patients, but I didn't get one as I was in the transitional care ward (because both DS1 and I were a bit ill). With DS2 (diff hosp), they said C/S patients would def. be on a ward, not in a private room, but I had him naturally. I got a room to myself (not ensuite though) as I had a really rough labour and birth, and then DS2 went to NICU. I think it would have been horrible to have been on a ward with other women and their babies without having mine.

MegBusset · 08/04/2008 08:32

Mine was an amenity room, £180 for the night (but there were slightly cheaper ones that didn't have an en-suite).

littone · 08/04/2008 09:21

I paid £120 per night for ammenity room (none with ensuite at my local hospital except the disabled accessible room. There is a special ward for C/S women where there are more midwives were ladies stay for first 24/48 hours before being moved to the main post natal ward. Would have thought at this stage you could request a room if it is available. This is a hospital in Surrey BTW.

Blocky · 08/04/2008 10:36

I paid £50 per night (amenity room, own en-suite) and I am glad I did as I was in for 3 days longer than I expected to be. Was lovely to be in a room where you could shut out the rest of the world and it's just you and your baby. Nice and clean too.

chubbymummy · 08/04/2008 21:13

Thanks for all your help ladies. It seems to vary a lot between different hospitals so I'll probably ring around the ones near me (I'm an equal distance fron 2 so I could go to either). Now all I need is to actually get pregnant!!!!!!!!! Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Amenity room in my local nhs hospital was £200 when I had dd, has now gone up to £225! My parents treated me for dd (was only in for one night) - have to say it was nice having the privacy and an en-suite bathroom (esp when coping with lack of pelvic floor muscles). Blooming expensive though...

whomovedmychocolate · 11/04/2008 17:15

If you whinge enough and they have one spare they will give it you free to shut you up IME - but I knows what you mean about the chavs
