Gas and Air for sweep?

I'm having a sweep on Monday. I've had one in my last pregnancy which hurt and then had some very strong contractions afterwards during the appointment, which I had to breathe through.

The MW has said I can have gas and air for the sweep and then if I get a few strong contractions again I can use it for those too.

Has anyone else used gas and air for a sweep? Or am I being a wimp?

I haven’t but I totally would if offered. I had a 10lb baby and the worst part by far was having a sweep.

I used it for sweeps. I found them painful and it distracted me quite well.

I don't think gas and air is necessary but then with my last pregnancy the midwife just did it without even telling me! I didn't find it painful at all but I did get strong contractions not long after and baby was born 48 hours later. Good luck

Never knew this was a thing! I opted for no sweeps when pregnant with baby2 because they hurt so much with baby1 and did nothing for me. Totally would have had a sweep if G&A was an option. Anything to get that baby going.

I was given gas and air by a very fun midwife with my 2nd child’s sweep : she said she would be able to give me a “really good rummage”.

  1. discovered I loved gas and air after having hated it with 1st birth and
  2. contractions started in the parking lot and he arrived 3/4 hours later so good luck

I wish I'd been allowed it when I had a sweep with my first....flat out refused to have one with my second.

My sweeps were done at the community midwives so no gas and air available, to be honest I didn’t need it so never thought of it

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 09/06/2024 07:23

I've had a lot of sweeps and never had gas and air. Tbh didn't find I needed it. But if it's offered and you feel it would help then go for it.

DustyLee123 · 09/06/2024 07:23

I didn’t need it.

Had 8 sweeps over 2 pregnancies I wish I'd been offered gas !

MummyJ36 · 10/06/2024 12:24

With DC1 I actually had to stop my first sweep it was so painful. Had I been offered gas and air I probably could have gotten through it. I’d take it OP if you think it would help. You are not being a wimp. A sweep is not a walk in the park. And truly; when it comes to pregnancy and birth, don’t ever call yourself a wimp, this is a big thing and you are doing amazingly. Take anything that you feel may help you ❤️

Hohofortherobbers · 10/06/2024 12:40

Had 2, not that painful but I'd have taken gas and air just to calm me down beforehand if offered. Most of my pain was cos I was so tensed up I reckon

Kinsters · 23/06/2024 11:11

No gas and air available outside the delivery room where I am but I would absolutely take it if I could as I find sweeps very painful.

Babybirdmum · 24/08/2024 09:09

Just don’t have a sweep you will still go into labour without one.
