Nine months after birth. Incredibly heavy periods

Hi everyone,

I am nine months post birth and all went ok with birth. I had a tear and needed a procedure to remove my placenta(in case that is relevant). Every month my period is getting heavier and heavier. Each month I end up in bed for at least once day a month with fatigue, heavy bleeding etc. I woke up at 5am covered in blood even though I was wearing tampon, maternity pad and two pairs of underwear!

I saw a woman's health doctor yesterday and she put me on a strong pill but I really would like to not have to take the pill again. It has given me issues with anxiety before and this has me worried. She also said it would help with the hair I have lost after birth.

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Thanks xx

When my periods (eventually) came back after having ds they were muuuch heavier. I would spend the day before the bleeding and day one (in the beginning day 2 as well) in bed while my dp looked after our ds they are absolutely horrendous
I'm pregnant now and glad to be getting another break from them for 7 months

But I don't know if it's normal so hoping someone who knows pops along to tell us !

Hi, I had this. I was told it is normal for periods to heavy for a good few months after it becomes back. To explain, it's essentially because your uterus going fully back to its normal size takes quite a long time. So for a while, there is just greater surface area. Mine did eventually return to normally.

However, whilst I was waiting I did get checked out to ensure I didn't have fibroids. As apparently this is another cause of heavy periods after birth.

Hope that helps

Did she offer any investigation @LavenderFlowers or offer an alternative, like the Mirena Coil?

FloofyBear · 11/05/2024 12:35

I had this, had to take tranexamic acid then had a Mirena coil fitted
Good luck

@CadyEastman I had a coil before and the insertion/removal put me off. No investigation was offered. I'm now wondering if I should go back to her
