Hi all,

I was quite shocked the other day to hear that my cousin, who's waters had broken and was talking to her consultant was offered a hysterectomy-she's only 28!!!

She was on baby 5 and this was c-section nr 4, but still ,I can hardly believe it.

Would this be a normal thing for a consultant to suggest?

NO, it is not normal to be offered that.

Does she have other female problems?

She might be offered sterilisation, but hysterectomy has a lot of consequences besides just removal of the womb and really shouldn't be offered unless truly necessary.

I would be very surprised if she was offered hysterectomy. Could it have been sterilisation and she's got confused? After 4 c sections I can understand them suggesting that she might not want to have any more children.

When you have had lots of babies there is a greater risk of problems and bleeding. I had to sign a consent form for a hysterectomy before my last 2 c-sections..just incase they couldn't stop the bleeding whilst in theatre. It means they can go straight away and save your life basically!

It is just a precaution...and luckily i never needed it done.

Maybe she is getting a bit mixed up?

Yes,thats what I would have thought and she doesn't have any other problems.

A few of us in the family were wondering if she should some kind of complaint.

This happened at a hospital in Ireland that has received a lot of bad press recently over a consultant performing unneccessary womb removals.

Needless to say that consultant is not there anymore and I really would have thought the hospital would have reviewed it's practices.

Maybe, she is getting bit mixed up, it does sound a bit radical.

Better not go in with all guns blazing so!

It's possible she was offered sterilisation at the time of the last csection.

And sometimes, the sterilisation can be removal of the Fallopian tubes at patient request.

But not womb removal unless there are some serious complications.
