Labour. What sign came first for you?

Anyone that has gone in to labour naturally. What was the FIRST sure sign that it was on the way.
Did you lose your mucus plug? Contractions? Waters breaking etc?
I'm interested what the most common starter is.

I am 39+4 and waiting for number 3 so watching this thread! My first two were both born by this point so I’m feeling very overdue 😅

DS1 - waters broke in spectacular fashion at 37+0 weeks, luckily I was at home. He was breech so csection once I got to hospital.
DS2 - contractions woke me up at 1am at 39+1. Had him 18ish hours later via VBAC and waters went at around 4pm when around 5cm dilated

Good luck with your VBAC 😊 harder at the time but the recovery after a csection for me personally was much quicker - very helpful when you have another child at home!

Roselilly36 · 05/03/2024 07:50

DS1 contractions started, early hours of the morning, I was holding him by lunchtime.

DS2 waters broke, late at night, he was in my arms two and a half hours later.

Good luck Op.

Contractions for me! Started about 1am and were mild, had them every 15 minutes or so and then progressed and got stronger throughout the day. My waters didn't break until about 2am the following day (she was born at 4am) when I was fully dilated. All contractions felt across my front.

WhiteHorse92 · 05/03/2024 16:08

Contractions for both of mine, although with #2 I had awful stomach cramps and tightness around the top of my bump and diarrhoea the evening and night before and vomited once during the night (woke up at 6am with contractions). Thought I had a sickness bug but the diarrhoea stopped immediately after I gave birth so I'm convinced it was a pre-labour thing 😅

CadyEastman · 08/03/2024 19:43

First one, wanting to go to the toilet regularly then realising I was having regular contractions, a bit like period pains.

Second one absolutely massive contractions, so strong I thought I was going to have them in the spot.

As always I'd recommend never waiting until your waters break if you're going to the Hospital.

With my first they had to break my waters and the second was born in theirs Wink

CadyEastman · 08/03/2024 19:45

Baby 3 was the freaky labour. Woke up. Sudden intense pressure, went to toilet expecting to need a poo. MASSIVE contraction, whole baby out still in sack of waters.

Jesus @lolomoon! That was a bit of a quick labour! Glad you're both ok Flowers

mondaytosunday · 08/03/2024 19:53

I stood up from the sofa and my waters broke in quite a spectacular fashion.

curlycurlymoo · 08/03/2024 21:40

1st woke up with bad period type pain.
2nd waters started going but no pain at all.

TheBirdintheCave · 09/03/2024 07:54

Nov 23rd 8.30am: I had a bit of bleeding just after my husband had left for work. I had my first contraction around 10am but they didn't become regular until 11pm that night.

Nov 24th 11.37pm: Son was born :)

Anywherebuthere · 09/03/2024 07:57

Waters leaking over the period of a week

Mucous plug going and water coming out in a gush

Contractions in the back

MsSquiz · 09/03/2024 08:03

With both girls, the only sign of labour I had was contractions! Had to have my waters broken both times once in hospital

justmyluck1234 · 09/03/2024 08:10

First time I had contractions but very mild... was in latent labour for a while before anything actually happened.

Second time had been losing some mucus plug for a little while (can't recall exactly how long) after this I had my waters leaking way have week a week or so apart.

Hotpolarbear · 09/03/2024 22:59

My ds is 3 weeks old.so I can remember it all pretty clearly. I thought I had peed myself at 00:20. Was my waters trickling. All night everytime he or i moved more came out. No other signs until 4pm when I woke up from a nap with the weakest period pain ever. About 6pm pain went from nothing to intense and he was born at 830 pm.

LorlieS · 09/03/2024 23:02

Waters partially went. About 48 hours later contractions started and baby was born about 24 hours after that! Third baby too!!

thenightsky · 09/03/2024 23:07

1st baby. Bounced downstairs to the loo and felt a whoosh. Thought I'd pee'd myself but it was waters as I saw floaty bits of white stuff in the loo.

2nd baby. Woke up at 3am thinking 'fuck I'm gonna have the shits, shouldn't have eaten that massive curry... hang on, I haven't eaten a massive curry'.

Louise295 · 09/03/2024 23:37

Contractions started first with my spontaneous labour. Very mild. I was laying there wondering if it was really contractions as I was 5 days over and desperate. Didn't take long to realise they were real 😂

Wrongsideofpennines · 09/03/2024 23:42

Plug went on my due date but then nothing for another 10 days. Contractions started very suddenly with a sort of 'twang' in my abdomen like my knicker elastic had snapped or something. Contractions continued about 5 minutes apart for 26 hours just building in intensity. I was in the pool when my waters went a couple of minutes before she was born. VBAC at 41+5.

Disneydatknee88 · 10/03/2024 00:11

I was overdue and induced with my first but with my 2nd I had bad guts, followed by intense cramps several hours later when I went into labor. My waters didn't break until I was already several cms and in birthing centre. Waters broke, weirdly after I randomly burst into tears!

Anxiulyyy · 10/03/2024 17:14

OnlyYellowRoses · 05/03/2024 06:26

All of them I just felt 'off' for a few hours before. Didn't want to go anywhere or leave home. Couple of hours before 3 of them, I had quite bad diarrhoea, I assume body's way of 'clearing out'.
Baby 1: mucus plug with period pains
Baby 2: waters went
Baby 4: period pain that turned into contractions.

Baby 3 was the freaky labour. Woke up. Sudden intense pressure, went to toilet expecting to need a poo. MASSIVE contraction, whole baby out still in sack of waters. 😂

Thats how I want it lol.

I don't want hours of pain, just give me one big push.

anon2022anon · 10/03/2024 17:17

The day before, threw up every time I ate anything, a little diarrhoea, cried all day that I was still pregnant (10 days over).
Woke up early hours of the morning, with a very clear knowledge that what I had were actual contractions, not Braxton hicks any more.

annlee3817 · 12/03/2024 22:38

Lots of specks of pinky blood in the toilet every time I went for a wee, ramp up of Braxton hicks, then at 1.30am the following morning my waters started to go, DD was born 6 hours later

Sarah000000 · 15/03/2024 21:48

Waters broke in bed at 6am .. I thought I had accidentally wet myself 😂 contractions came fast and born at 11:41am (1st baby / 8lb4 .. at 40 weeks 😳)

Pixiesgirl · 15/03/2024 21:56

Only went into labour with first, felt uncomfortable for a couple of hours so had a bath, then mild contractions and losing plug. Went into hospital next morning was having regular but mild contractions, was 3cm dilated. Ended up with emcs due to fetal distress after they broke my waters (meconium) and failure to progress. We both ended up on antibiotics after I developed a fever during labour.

Next two were elcs.

Loubelle70 · 15/03/2024 22:01

Jelliclecats · 04/03/2024 21:03

My waters have never gone until baby is nearly out (six children). First sign is low back pain, it reminds you vaguely of period back pain but it’s not quite like that…comes in waves and I realise it’s my contractions lol.

Exactly same. Period like pains in Lower back and cramps like constipation cramps 😁

LightSpeeds · 15/03/2024 22:28

Baby 1: waters broke
Baby 2: contractions
Baby 3: contractions
Babies 4/5: upset stomach
