Extreme phobia of vomit. Labour vs c-section?

Can anyone give me their honest experiences of vomiting during labour / delivery or during a C-section please?

What caused the vomiting?
Can anything be done to stop or prevent it?
Which birthing option is more likely to experience vomiting?

I’m not scared of birth, needles, blood or pain but the idea of vomit fills me with the worst anxiety and dread. I can’t stress enough how bad my phobia is.

There's a risk of vomiting whatever you do. Deal with the fear, not the risk.

For what it's worth, I vommed after pethidine in labour but not during c section. Second birth was vaginal and no vom. Quite a lot of shit though ;)

I have had two natural births (one induced with an epidural, one with no painkillers and a water birth then an emergency GA for a PPH afterwards) and wasn't sick with either. I did find that the gas and air made me feel queasy so I didn't use it. And I don't get sick from general anaesthetic so that wasn't a problem either.

I vomited both times I was in labour just before I gave birth. A lot of people are sick during labour. Don’t think there’s much you can do to prevent it.

Threw up during both EMC

I’ve had a natural birth and a planned section.

I felt very nauseous for a small period time during both. For the c-section my anaesthetist gave me something through the IV that immediately stopped it. For the natural birth I got given a cardboard sick bucket 🤣 I truly would not recommend a c section based on this though.

I know your midwife has been unhelpful OP but could you ask your GP to make an urgent referral for some CBT? And make to sure you put your phobia on your birth notes and ask your birth partner to make it clear on arrival.

I used gas and air throughout labour - no nausea or sickness whatsoever. I think gas and air can make some people feel nauseous but the good thing about it is that as soon as you stop using it, it's effects stop (as opposed to something like pethidine). So you could try it and stop if it doesn't suit you.

I have given birth both ways and wasn’t sick for either.

I vomited after vaginal birth but the iv metronidazole they gave me was the culprit! Was no avoiding it though as I had to have a manual removal of my placenta in theatre after the birth and they gave it to prevent a womb infection

mumsince2021 · 10/03/2024 11:01

@Mercury2702 that's interesting I also had a manual removal of placenta in theatre but never got given that (as far as I'm aware) so wasn't sick 🤔 can I ask if you have any other kids and if so did you have the retained placenta with them? I'm due again and just wondered if I'm going to have the same

I had 9 months of hideous hyperemesis… had emergency c section and felt like I was going to be sick, told the anaesthetist who injected some magic potion and the sickness vanished. Like absolute magic. I could have done with him 9 months earlier.

Oh really! I had my son in 2016 so unsure if things have changed but yeah they gave me it as a drip in recovery. I don’t have anymore kids yet but I remember being told if you have it once, you have an increased risk of it happening again. Hopefully not though!

I had an emergency c section, I didn't vomit nor did I ever feel sick.

totallyaddictedtocheese · 10/03/2024 20:38

I was sick quite a lot whilst in labour. The midwife told me it was very common and a sign baby was ready to be born. I didn't have any painkillers so it definitely wasn't caused by medication.

Lauren83 · 12/03/2024 22:11

I have emet too, I was majorly panicking during my section that I would be sick, they gave the max antiemetics they could but I was panicking so much about vomiting lying on my back in front of people that they sedated me as soon as the baby was out, I had another the year after and they agreed to do the same which helped, the anaesthetists said sickness was usually due to a blood pressure drop so he kept updating me on by BP and had something else ready to give me if my BP went too low
