So been to hospital today as I thought my back waters had gone. Was just discharge. I got told at the sweep last week that my cervix was 2cm. Today I got told that its closed. I've lost all my mucus plug. So I asked her can you still lose your mucus plug when closed she said yeah. Surely you only start to lose it when you start to dilate. So I don't know why she said yeah 🤔 so I'm going to trust what my midwife said. Honestly don't know really why I'm posting. Trying not to be frustrated. Also been having loads of bh/contractions. Last night I had 18 in a hour. They just instantly said bh but surely they wouldn't be able to say unless I was hooked up to a monitor.
Got another midwife appointment next week so if I make it that far will get another sweep. Thank you for reading 🙂

Well Braxton hicks become contractions when they start making changes to your cervix, so the fact that they examined and could see there weren't yet any changes to your cervix would show that they were Braxton hicks. When the midwife/doctor said your cervix was closed, was that after a vaginal exam or speculum?

Also your mucus plug is replenished by your body, so it's unlikely it's all come away completely

I know a lot of midwives who would consider 2cm closed. You're not considered labouring until 4cm and even then you can end up there for days as it means nothing without regular strong contractions opening the cervix more and more.

First baby?

The fact the midwife last week said it waw 2cm. And was soft and mushy. Speculum I personally don't think she looked properly. As I've lost all my mucus plug and you can't lose it when the cervix is closed.

Well that's fair enough if she meant it like that. Second baby

Obviously I'm not sure how she meant it but I'd be inclined to believe it was an off handed 'closed' rather than telling you the exact dilation and efficacy which she probably should have. Can you get an appointment with your midwife to double check?

I've got another appointment next Wednesday which I'm going to ask for another sweep. If I make it that far. And tbf she was mainly doing a swab to check if it was my waters but I'll know more on Wednesday either way.

@restingrichface like it must be open a bit otherwise I wouldn't of lost my mucus plug and I know I've lost it all. An absolute shit tonne came away and it did for like 4 days and went back to watery discharge. And most of it was bloody. I know it can replenish but I doubt it will at this stage. Due in 2 days

Like say if they are bh. Would you say it's a good thing I'm having that many in an hour? As the days go on I get more in the hour. I read someone on here say their contractions felt like bh and were actually contractions.

It all sounds like your body is getting prepared for labour, it's all positive!

Braxton hicks are your body preparing for the really thing, and yes hopefully making some changes to your cervix! It may have already happened for you overnight, or you could still be pregnant next week. Nobody can say. But bh become contractions when they become strong, continuous and start dilating your cervix. With second babies the latent stage of labour (where your cervix starts getting shorter and softer) is often a lot quicker so once the BH become strong and regular phone the birth centre/hospital.

Good luck @blackpanth

Get lots of rest. I had 5 days of this sort of thing before my first baby. I got super excited and did lots of walking about. By the time it all ramped up I was already tired. Try to ignore it all and relax. When it is real labour you won’t be able to ignore it.

whyamiawakestill · 23/12/2023 08:50

Sounds exactly like my slow labour my plug went and I had 4 days of mild contractions was up and about, bit of resting, and was 2cm dilated. After 4 days I was 7 but still at home and still mild, I couldn't count mine in the first days as it was just back pain and gripping pain, days 2-4 they became more obvious but still not strong enough for hospital.

Then waters broke my first DS was 2 hours full labour, 2nd was 40 minutes.

Just to say potentially be ready for a speedy last stage.
