How long overdue?

At your trust how long are you ‘allowed’ to go overdue before you get booked in for an induction or section?

12 days I think, east Kent

So does that mean they start the process on day 12 or they aim to have the baby out then?

Don't want to say trust but at my trust it was 14 days when they started the process. At another local trust it is 10 days.

WhatInTheFuckery · 06/12/2023 20:30

At mine they induce at 12 days over with the aim to have the baby out by 14 days overdue

Oh wow that’s quite late. My preference tbh. I need to ask my trust again but I’m pretty sure they started the process around 10 days with my first born snd this time it’s like a week over 😕

For me it was 13 days. I hope things get going for you soon!

bakewellbride · 06/12/2023 21:04

Not sure sorry

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 06/12/2023 21:11

They would never force you but NHS Scotland policy I think is to discuss when one week overdue.

Nothankyou22 · 06/12/2023 21:13

Both of mine were induced 12 days overdue

luckbealadytonight · 06/12/2023 21:24

41+5 SE London/Kent

luckbealadytonight · 06/12/2023 21:26

You can flat out decline OP.

Ask for additional monitoring instead if you prefer, or nothing!

Cdoc · 06/12/2023 21:58

Mine changed very recently, it was 41+5 until a few months ago, now they offer everyone an induction at 41 weeks (Dartford and Gravesham)

I think ours is now 41 due to new evidence about going over being more risky. I think it’s just to cover themselves and I kind of get it but doesn’t work for everyone.

41+5

I declined both times and my babies were born spontaneously at 41+5 and 41+6

LorlieS · 08/12/2023 23:45

I went 14 days over with first child and felt pressured into an induction. In retrospect I wish I'd have refused 😞

Oh really how come? How long would you have gone? I’d probably consider it at 14 days but 7 feels way too early for me.

How did they react when you declined? Did you have lots of extra monitoring?

Originalusername89 · 09/12/2023 17:45

@Lelophants

With my first, my midwife said she 'had' to make me the induction appointment and then I could decline on the day. Then they said I couldn't ring up and decline, I had to go in to decline (waste of NHS resources if you ask me) so not knowing any better I went in, got monitored and had to wait for a consultant to come and see me to tell me the 'risks'. I was headstrong about going home so just nodded and said yep yep yep. They wanted my in for daily monitoring after that but baby was born 4am the next morning.

With my second, being much more informed I said I wouldn't entertain an induction until 42 weeks so don't bother with the appointment and if they 'had to' then I just wouldn't turn up. We compromised on having the birth choices lady from the hospital contact me at 42w to 'make a plan' again, baby was born at 41+5 so no need.

It's difficult standing up for yourself but they can't exactly bring you to hospital against your will, so if it's easier just nod and smile and then don't turn up or say you changed your mind.

Originalusername89 · 09/12/2023 17:47

@Lelophants sorry in answer to your actual question no I didn't, but with my first I would have from 41+5 and with my second I would have agreed to it from 42. Again it's up to you what you accept. I was planning a home birth and going into hospital daily too soon would have totally brought me out of the 'zone'

Christmascracker25 · 09/12/2023 17:48

7 days in our trust although they offered it to me at 40 weeks 🙄I declined and gave birth at 41+6.

WeightoftheWorld · 09/12/2023 18:08

Iirc a couple of yrs ago I was offered induction as early as 41+0. I declined it and got a date for 41+5 and DC came spontaneously two days earlier in the end anyway.

Pastaf0rbreakfast · 09/12/2023 18:22

I went into labour at 41+6 and the only form of induction that had been discussed/offered was a sweep (which I did have at 41+3 but it didn’t do anything). This time around I’m planning to see how I feel but as long as baby and I are okay I’ll go for additional monitoring over an induction.

supercalifragilistic123 · 09/12/2023 18:28

The national guidance has changed quite recently to 41 weeks. (I work in Obstetrics)

My first was induced at 40+14 born at 40+16, but that was nearly 9 years ago now.

Wednesday6 · 09/12/2023 20:54

I don't know I just said I don't want induction and happy to go overdue, no questions asked, they just booked me into for follow up scans. I had low risk pregnancy, baby normal size. They had no concerns even though it was IVF pregnancy and they knew my exact due date. I gave birth naturally 10 days overdue.

LorlieS · 09/12/2023 22:45

It is very important to weigh up the actual pros of induction vs the cons. Knowing what I know now I would personally never have been induced, even having gone over two weeks. It is certainly not the case you hit 14 days over and then it's unsafe to wait.
