How far apart for contractions before you contact m/w for home birth?

At one stage my m/w said contact them when contractions are around 10 mins apart, but got conflicting message today saying 3 minutes? So not sure if it's different for a home birth compared to hospital?

I think it depends on how previous labours have gone TBH. For some women they go from every three minutes to pushing in an hour, for others they go right from irregular cx to crowning. But if it's your first baby, I'd just ring them back and say 'how often and lasting how long' which is the real question.

I would ring her when they are 10 mins apart. Even if it is just to put her on notice that she will be needed soon.

Is it happening now then? Are you definitely in labour?

pooka · 12/03/2008 20:37

I'd ring earlier rather than later because it's a home birth. It gives them a chance to schedule etc. I left it too late with ds, and had to go into hospital which was a shame as was 10cm when I got there.

hmm for me it was a second birth and mine were 3 mins apart.

I'm 0-60mph in labour so went from ouch painful BH to full blown labour the next contraction. I don't get a break one finishes next one starts, want to know what it's like to have 10 minutes between contractions.

I agree with whomovedmychocolate everyone is so different and you can't really tell until you are in labour, aren't you supposed to go into hospital when they are 5 minutes apart?

ChasingSquirrels · 12/03/2008 20:40

With ds2 I called the hospital as soon as I had my first contraction, but then I had had a reasonably 1st quick birth and my waters had gone 10 mins earlier.
Baby was born 15 mins later - no midwife (unsuprisingly).

Lulumama · 12/03/2008 20:51

at 10 minutes, so they are on notice. especially if this is not your first, as can go much quicker

fitnfortyone · 12/03/2008 20:58

it's my first, under 10 mins but haven't got a pattern yet other than lasting for 55secs or so at a time...

Really really hope this is it, will be so gutted if it's just a reaction to the sweep with no further dilation!

I waited until I couldn't concentrate on Coronation Street. I wasn't timing contractions (everybody else was, mind!) I just knew that if Corrie was pissing me off, then it was probably time.
