THis has the potential to be slightly unhelpful, for which I apologise in advance, but if you are candidate for homebirth then I can tell you brilliant things about the Stevenage midwives. I had a bad first birth experience in a hosp (not in Herts) and visiting hte Lister gave me the heebi-jeebies, hance my decision to have my second child at home. Hope someone else can help you with hospital comparisons too.

I had both DS and DD at the Lister. Both times were good experiences .

I was in hospital for much of 3 weeks before DS was born, due to pre-eclampsia and had no problems. Birth itself wasn't the best experience, but that was due to DS's heart rate falling, a forceps delivery and my having a PPH which needed to be sewn up in theatre , followed by a blood transfusion later on that day. After care was good - there always seemed to be plenty of midwives around.

With DD, the birth was a lot simpler and again that was a good experience. I stayed in one night that time. Between DS and DD all the beds were replaced with aujustable ones. Curtains stayed the same (interesting patterns ) but that may have changed as DD is nearly 2.6 now.

i had dd2+3 at lister. both good experiences and i felt listened to. unlike my experience at the QE2 in wgc when i had dd1.

i live back in WGC and would always choose lister over QE" (i know its not a hospital on your list but thats how i feel)

I had both dses at the L&D and have nothing but praise. The mws (particularly those on the delivery suite and in the Day Assessment Unit) were all fantastic - nothing too much trouble, really supportive and caring, etc. Consultants good too. Wards very clean.

Special Care Unit fantastic (saved ds1's life), but I hope you wouldn't need it.

I should have gone to the Lister for ds2 but because I was a higher risk pregnancy (pre-eclampsia, ds1 needing scbu) my gp said that the L&D was a more sensible choice in case things went pear-shaped.

Some downsides to L&D - parking is a nightmare, wards can be noisy.

Hi hansnava. Did you see me mention the Lister on our thread yesterday? I had dd there, and will be having dc2 there too. I was quite happy with them last time. Midwives were very good, although some of that may be in the luck of the draw.

I have several friends who have used the L&D and all been happy there too though, parking excepted.

I had DS at Lister and was fine.

As a first timer I was anxious over cleanliness and was glad I went on a tour of the maternity ward (on a saturday if I remember rightly) to put my mind at rest.

I was in a room of my own as gave birth on the ward rather than in the labour suite - due to very speedy arrival of DS! was very glad to have my own toilet.

Good luck where ever you decide

I grew up in stevenage and i am not a fan of lister however they do have a seperate maternity unit. Many of my freinds have been there and have not complained at all.I am not a fan of the hospital however my freinds can be real complaining bitch's although I do love them. They have said nothing but good about the maternity ward. I know money is regually raised for the unit and they do well so it is a valuable feature of the community. I am not a fan of the rest of the hosp and I have not heard anything about Luton. But obviously anywhere you go nurses resources are going to be stretched...and I had my son in another hospital as I live in st neots. But no complaints with freinds. Just remember you still have a brain because what ever hospital you go in they seem to have thought you have lost it on the way. they get bossy and you listen.....good luck!
