Breech options

At 28 weeks my midwife thought baby was breech. At 32 weeks she said baby was head-down. Now at 36 weeks she's unsure and has ordered a scan for tomorrow to check whether baby is breech.

Is it common to have a scan when unsure? Do babies often turn out to be the right way around?

If baby is breech: I know I can do an ECV and will take this option if it's available. Otherwise I know a planned C-section will be offered. I'd really rather avoid this as I want to get back to my very active lifestyle as soon as possible and it's big surgery. What else can I do? And do babies that are breech at 36 weeks still tend to head down at some point? I know the website spinning babies but it's hard as I do tend to do a lot of those kinds of exercises anyway with yoga etc.

Consultant told me mine was breach 2 weeks before due date. I was so sad as I wanted a home birth. I went to a kids park and sat on the swings chatting to my mum on the phone rather than going straight home. I felt an almighty swoosh and ds turned right there on the swings. I went for a private scan the next working day to confirm. Good luck and I hope you get that turn!

When I had my ECV, they scanned the woman in the next bed pre her ECV and her baby had turned already so they didn't need to do her ECV. So some people do get lucky!
I had my ECV successfully, but had a long back to back labour ending in being rushed to theatre to turn baby with forceps. If I had another breech baby I'd go for caesarean personally. But everyone's experience is different.

I know women who have birthed a breech vaginally. Depending on the type of breech, it may be an option.

There’s something called Moxibustion that hs been proven to help turn breech babies though it is all a bit odd when you read about it! It’s a good alternative to the spinning babies stuff.

If baby is still breech and you want a vaginal birth there’s something called optibreach which is a programme working on re-skilling midwives and doctors for breech vaginal birth. They publish a list of participating sites.

Also yes babies do turn and can turn quite late!

Thanks for all the helpful comments. Scan today confirmed baby is head-down – not breech. Very relieved :)
