How do i get to the hospital?

How did you get there when you went into labour?

Last time my dad drove me in but he may well be in london this time. I wouldn't feel safe with either my mum or in-laws driving me in (definitely not!)as they would definitely be distracted and i don't think a taxi would feel too safe either. What other options are there? Is there generally some sort of hospital transport?

Or should i get the bus? It does go from the end of my road.....

I had 3 homebirths and the midwives cleard everything up! DH would recommend it to anyone!

Lottie, the woman is 65!

I can also recommend getting a black cab as well call 08700700700 and it sends the nearest one to you - I think it was comcab or one of the big firms - the driver was very nice about it, but did mention that it was a brand new cab and it was his first night out in it, so he was really hopeing I didn't give birth in it. I also got the bus home from the hospital earlier in the day while having mild contractions - and for once I did get offered a seat!

agree a taxi driver won't take you if they know you are in labour

hatrick that is interesting
I've been told for sure they won't take you

duchesse · 01/03/2008 08:41

I've had two homebirths, and I second, third or whatever that there really isn't that much mess, as the midwives brings those sterile green tarpaulins and take them away again. Well worth considering if you've no contraindications.

how nice of him hatrick! I was considering a birthing centre this time but was worried I would not be able to get there
the midwife said a taxi was out
I have hired a doula now so she can take me if necessary I suppose
if I'd had known the taxi drivers could be persuaded to act as doulas I could have saved a lot of money

duchesse · 01/03/2008 08:49

That clip is funny lottie- and the roads were so empty sigh

I went in a cab and had no bother. First cab called at 3am just after waters broke - didn't mention maternity ward. Second cab to take us home again to wait until labour started properly and then 3rd cab when the party really started.

3rd cab driver was really nervous to be honest, but by the stage I didn't give two hoots and would have turned rather nasty if he had threatened not to take us

Did sit on a huge bath towel to prevent ruining seats though and we had to have a huge amount of cash handy just in case there were lots of taxi trips.

My dh doesn't drive either.

lottiejenkins · 01/03/2008 08:54

Thanks duchesse, im glad someone else thought it was funny!

Another homebirth advocate here - MWs definitely clean up afterwards. DH was sceptical at first but after the event was raving to everyone about it

glitterbird · 01/03/2008 15:17

it did not even occur to me that a cab would not take me DH and I don't own a car and just assumed we would book one when the time comes. thanks for the tip about not mentioning labour when booking and find a cab company through hospital.
