Being induced for a second time

Pink Pamplemousse · 01/08/2023 17:00

I made another thread a while ago about elective c section second time round, however due to various reasons I may now be induced later this week at 40w+5.

I was dead against another induction due to difficulties last time but I'm coming round to the idea a bit more now.

Just for context, my first induction involved pessary, waters broken 30ish hours later, hormone drip, failed epidural, forceps and PPH.

I was just wondering- for those who have had 2 or more inductions, how did the second go?

Thanks ☺️

I've had 4.

1st was miserable, lasted 12ish hours, pessary, drip, epidural and ended in theatre, back to back, ventouse, episiotomy and third degree tear and minor pph.

2nd was my only, very overdue, spontaneous at 10days late. Start to finish was about 19hrs but actual active labour was 6. 2nd degree tear and home for tea time.

3rd was induced at 42wks. My waters were broken and she was born 2hrs later. It was an intense labour in that I quickly had no gaps but it was quick! 2nd degree tear.

4th was induced for large size at 40wks. My waters were broken but nothing happened. They wanted to put me on the drip but I said epidural first! I waited from about 4pm to 11.30pm for an anesthetist. Labour once started was about 4hrs. He surprised them by being being inches from being born when they finally agreed to check me.

5th was induced at 41wks because I was over 40. She was another waters broke and out in 2hrs. Despite babies 3 and 4 being reasonably quick once started, the MW seemed surprised again at the speed.

So for me all my subsequent inductions, although disappointing not to go spontaneous, were entirely straightforward.

I've had 3. First was pessary, waters, drip, forceps. Second was pessary, waters, drip. Third was pessary. Each time was also quicker than the last and less painful. Hope you have a similarly positive experience, good luck!

TeddyBeans · 02/08/2023 16:50

I had pessary, drip etc for DS5. My trust don't do pessary anymore because they found it doesn't act fast enough and contributed to more interventions. I had the gel with DD 5 months ago and instead of a drawn out 30 hour labour, she was out in 1 hr 25 minutes. It's the same hormones just at a higher quantity. The labour was intense, there was no time for any pain relief other than gas and air but I'm quite pleased it was over and done with so quickly!

Pink Pamplemousse · 02/08/2023 18:22

Thank you for all of your replies! I'm feeling a lot more positive about induction now.

So I arrived this morning at the hospital, they examined me before putting the pessary in but said as I'm 2cm dilated already I don't need the pessary and can go straight to having my waters broken. Unfortunately there's a long list of people waiting to have their waters broken so I've been sent home to wait for a call when they've got a slot within the next few days 🙈 anyone experienced this?!

Hi OP, so not quite the same but with my second (also second induction) I had a pessary for 24 hours which did nothing (started at almost 2cm dilated and was still the same after 24 hours) so they then went straight to breaking my waters.

Contractions started within 30 mins and DC2 was born less than 2 hours later.

No complications (unlike first DC) except I tore in the same way and there was loads of meconium in my waters (again).

I had a really positive second birth that sort of 'healed' me emotionally from DC1 birth! Good luck Flowers

PeachesMcQueen · 02/08/2023 19:55

Yes @Pink Pamplemousse i had similar to you. Went in to be induced at 40 weeks, found to be 3cm dilated already so could bypass all the pesarys etc and go straight to having waters broken. I waited all day but later that evening my waters broke naturally. Baby was out within the hour. Shockingly fast but at least there was no waiting around for drips etc to work. Good luck, everyone told me second baby’s are much quicker!

I'm hoping that's exactly what happens, it's the dream really to stop the waiting round 😂 glad it was so positive for you! Fills me with hope 🙏

That's lovely to hear and I'm so glad you had a better experience second time round, I'm hoping for the same healing 🙏

Oh, please keep us posted, come on baby!

eleanoreleanoreleanor · 02/08/2023 23:21

I hope so to @PinkPamplemousse
One thing I do vividly remember helping is that i felt much more in control the second time. I knew what was coming, how much pain I could handle and most importantly I had the confidence to ask for checks to see how far along I was etc. I felt able to say when I needed pain relief and generally having been through it once before, I knew roughly what to expect.
I will be sending lots of good, healing birth vibes your way, I hope however it happens, you get the birth you want Flowers

So I've only been induced once but it was a fairly positive experience. Went in at 6pm 38+4. Baby was too active for any gels or anything. His heart rate was up and down and they couldn't work out what his baseline was. 4 hours on monitoring and they decided to do an internal. Was already 2cm dialted so no need for gels etc. Took me over to the delivery suite at 11pm to have my waters broken. Left me for a couple of hours to see if things happened naturally. Drip was started at 1am. By 5am was fully dialated and he was born at 7.46am. No forceps or anything required. Only had one dose of diamorphine other wise I just had gas and air. 2 vaginal wall tears (2nd degree) and a graze to the labia. Home 2 days later as they had to do quite a few tests with him due to complications in my pregnancy. I'd happily opt for a second induction if needed.

toddlermum27 · 02/08/2023 23:42

Went into labour naturally with first but went on drip as things weren't progressing so effectively an induction - awful traumatic and long birth

Induced with second after waters went but labour didn't start - very positive experience, night and day different, all progressed quickly and was straightforward.

Hope all goes well for you.

Pink Pamplemousse · 03/08/2023 15:16

So I had a small gush of water after standing up and a wet patch on my trousers this morning, genuinely not sure if I peed myself or it's my waters 🙈 the only reason I'm doubting it is it didn't seem to be a lot, when my waters were broken with my daughter there was loads!

I've been called to go in this afternoon so I suppose we'll soon see!

How are you getting on @Pink Pamplemousse?

Ah thanks for asking, I'm still waiting for my waters to be broken despite being called over 24 hours ago 🙈 things are just at a complete standstill at the hospital, it seems to be the same everywhere. I'm exhausted tbh!!

Update: Had my baby boy in the early hours of this morning.

Really positive induction this time, waters broken around 6pm, contractions properly kicked in around midnight and out by 3.30am! I did have to have the drip to get things going again so I requested an epidural at the same time. Unfortunately the epidural didn't work very well (same as last time, anaesthetist explained sometimes it's just people's individual anatomy unfortunately) but I managed the contractions on gas and air and he arrived safely at 9lb 8oz- so not the small baby my growth scans had predicted!

Just wanted to post in case anyone else is worried about induction for a second time in the future 💙

Aww huge congratulations OP! That's such lovely news and I'm so glad it was positive this time around! Enjoy those lovely new baby snuggles!!

grunttheterrible · 05/08/2023 20:39

1st was induced by drip due to meconium in waters- 21h Labour and horrendous.

Second planned induction via pessary due to IUGR. Went into Labour within an hour and baby born within 6 hours. Difficult as due to covid I had to do a lot alone but don't expect a second induction will necessarily be as bad as the first x

toddlermum27 · 06/08/2023 06:59

Congratulations!

ferntwist · 06/08/2023 07:06

Hey girls, due to be induced tomorrow I'm 40+2 getting induced as baby weighing in at 9lb2!

This is my 2nd baby had my dd 7 year ago right enough was induced with the drip as didn't know when waters were broke..

Just wondering as am so nervous to hear your story's with being induced with pessery she's not fully engaged either so couldn't get a sweep today or on Monday there.
I really don't want to be in hospital for days waiting for labour to start

Was your 2nd labour quicker ?

How was being induced ?

Just feeling nervous but excited to have her here now 🥲❤️🤞🏽
