Maternity facilities from Newbury and Oxfordshire villages / midwife care / post-birth care

Hi all, I am doing some research. Me and my husband are looking to mainly move from London to Oxfordshire or Newbury. We will be starting a new family there in one of these places, and currently in the process of finding our family home (we are just trying to rule one place out).

We are wondering if mums and dads out there could kindly share their more recent experiences of their pregnancy and post-birth care in Newbury and Oxfordshire?

I'm quite nervous about there being no main hospital from Newbury to give birth (I want to deliver in a hospital). Also, how is access to Midwives, and what about post-birth care and home visits for check-ups and help with newborn baby, breastfeeding and things like that? What about GP access?

In my mind, I feel the access to these services is better in Oxfordshire, from the villages and small towns, but this might just be because I know there is the main University and Hospitals in Oxford itself, whereas West Berkshire feels more spread out.

Thank you so much!

I had two babies in Berkshire and am about to have my third in Oxfordshire.

My care in Oxfordshire has been truly outstanding, from the tiny community midwife office in my local village to the JR. I have been so well looked after, I cannot fault it.

Another vote for Oxfordshire. The John Radcliffe is superb both for maternity and post natal. They have an excellent high risk pregnancy unit too. Also, they have a stand alone Children's Hospital with Children's A&E on the John Radcliffe site. We've been a few times and can't fault the service there.

Everyone in Newbury gets used to being in the middle of four hospitals (Reading, Basingstoke, Swindon and Oxford), and I have heard good and bad about them all. Depending on where you end up will also influence your preference. I’m not sure that helps with a decision except to reassure you that people manage in the area! Good luck.

I am so happy for you and congratulations! Just to clarify, are you based in a village in Oxfordshire? Not Newbury? :)
