Labour stories!!!!

Hi all,

About to welcome my second DC in 5 weeks via induction(38 weeks) I'm hoping this one isn't long as I was in for 5 days with my first.

When did you go into labour?
How long was your labour?
How was it compared to your first?
How was the recovery?

I also think I'm experiencing braxton hicks this time around which I didn't with my first so that's making me nervous 😬

Would love to hear your stories below!

Both DC were pretty much the same..

DC1 - 38+3 went to hospital to be checked for a bleed and I was 3cm and sent to prenatal ward, labour never established but I got to 5cm with no regular contractions. Put on the drip at 38+5 and baby delivered in 3hrs.

DC2 - 37+5 waters broke and taken to hospital to check, was 3cm but because of my previous fast labour (they only counted 3hrs) they kept me in again labour never established so taken down to be put on drip again at 38 weeks. DC2 was born 1.5hrs later.

I only had gas and air with both but felt more calm with DC2 because I knew what my body wanted me to do. Also knew the harder I pushed the quicker it would be over 🙈😂

Recovery was so much easier with DC2 I felt relatively back to normal after about a week.

I was the same re braxton hicks with DC2 but they were exactly like contractions and had to be checked multiple times from 35 weeks.

Good luck OP❤️

Eldest DS induced at 38 weeks had him at 38+3. He was back to back and a doctor has to turn him as I just couldn't push him out when he was back to back! 2nd degree tear but all fine after being stitched. 7lb 2oz he weighed when he was born.

DD & Youngest DS (Twins)
Induced at 35+6 as I was already 2cm dilated and had ICP and BA's were 122 so they needed to come out.
Had them at 36 weeks. Active labour was around 4ish hours. Born 8 minutes apart and DS was delivered breech which we knew he would be anyway. Had about 12 doctors in the room as precaution. No tears this time!
DD 5lb 4oz and DS 5lb 1oz when they were born.

Good luck!

First labour 24 hours from first twinge to birth, she was born on her due date. I had a post partum haemorrhage but was home the next day.

Second labour, induced at 37 weeks due to waters breaking at 34. I just had the gel, which started contractions immediately. Didn't need the drip. It was 11 hours from gel being applied to DD2 being born. I was terrified of being induced but for me it was fine, better than my first labour. No haemorrhage but we had to stay in two nights as she was slightly jaundiced.

Sorry active labour was 6 and half with the twins. I just read back on my notes!

Congratulations OP, and not long to go now. I have had four live births and the only thing I can say is none of them were the same at all. I will try and answer your questions though.
DS1
When did you go into labour? A week late, at 2.30 in the morning, woken suddenly, and fully sure I was in labour (5 mins apart) Had a sweep a day or so earlier. How long was your labour? 10 hours, but it wasn't great. Gas n Air, then I think pethidine, then epidural, baby too big to get out, then ventouse, forceps, then born (doctors had leg up on table to get leverage). 10lbs 2oz. How was it compared to your first? Was my second labour as first was stillborn at 24 weeks, but first "proper" labour. How was the recovery? OK ish, in hospital a few days, bad tears, fissures, emotional, hungry baby.
DD1 ( year later)
When did you go into labour? Nearly two weeks late, had a sweep a day or so earlier. Had a "bit of a tummy ache" in the morning but decided it might have been something I had eaten, went the loo, and carried on with my jobs (which was desperately trying to get new baby's room ready whilst looking after a one year old). Did not think I was in labour, until I suddenly DID realise as I was having to stop every minute or so because I had more "tummy ache". I cannot, even now, believe I was so ridiculously stupid over this. Massive rush into hospital. Contractions in corridor, hopped on bed, 9cm dilated. How long was your labour? Longer than it should have been, I ended up getting an epidural as the anaesthetist was passing by and I knew how much comfort it gave me first time round so I opted for it, where a few sniffs of gas an air would have done the trick within minutes. A peaceful hour or so she was born, 9lbs 2oz, my smallest How was it compared to your first? Much better. How was the recovery? Fine, out of there within 24 hours.

DD2 - Late again (2 weeks), and I was super keen to be induced and went in for an uncomfortable night before, then, the next morning, after the pessaries, continuous agony the next morning where nobody would believe I was in labour. No pain relief apart from a bit of gas and air at the end. No admittance to labour ward until an hour before she was born at 9lbs 13oz.
DS2 - Lying badly in womb on side at 36 weeks, and after nearly losing him at 15 weeks, so admitted to hospital due to "quick labours". Eventually turned and got head down, so induced at 37 weeks. Induction as horrible and painful as I remembered it last time. Took an epidural though, and took my time. Born after 6 hours, 3 weeks early and over 9lbs despite not being fully ready for the world (covered in vernix, and some almost premie baby issues). If I had my time again I would a) not be induced unless there was some medical reason, b) I would learn to use gas and air better, although I am not ashamed of the epidurals c) cutting is better than tearing. d) hospital is a good thing, esp for your first. but it is quite lonely, I was glad to come home. I hope all this helps, I know it is a long post xx

DD - went into spontaneous labour at 6:30am. 33 hours of labour, including 2 hours of pushing. Cat 1 emcs at 10cm. massive PPH, blood transfusion. Took 5 months to feel like myself again.

DS - went into spontaneous labour at 3pm. Back to back contractions from the beginning. Got to 9cm in 3 hours. Was told I could go for a vbac or have an emcs (I'd booked an elcs). I could feel ds moving down and knew it wouldn't take long but I went for the emcs anyway. Regret it now! I refused to move for another 3 hours to stop my front waters going and ds coming out with them as they said he would - it was a long wait for theatre. I felt back to normal within 3 weeks.

toddlermum27 · 20/06/2023 10:53

So much easier second time round!

prayforthecottransfer · 20/06/2023 10:54

I should add that I had an epidural at 7cm in my first labour and didn't have any pain relief with my second until I arrived at hospital at 9cm. Then I was given gas and air (did nothing!).

Jammiedodger12 · 20/06/2023 14:02

First DC - Water broke at 40+5... laboured at home for 24 hours (unit kept telling me I wasn't in labour because I could talk to them on the phone). Went to hospital 24 hrs later for induction but when I arrived I was 10cm and ready to go. Ds was born 1 hr later.

DD - had a sweep at 40+2, started getting contractions at 9am at 40+3 - went to hospital at 8pm, waters broke at 9pm and DD was born at 10pm. Much better experience. Again no pain relief at all, gas and air made me feel ill.
