How long did labour last

First time mum.
Waters broke around 2.30pm yesterday, no contractions.
She had the hormone drip (not sure what it's called) around 2.30 today to bring on contractions. She's now having contractions.

It's my friend.
How long roughly was you in labour for after being induced with waters already broken, before baby arrives. She's also 38 weeks

First- induced no sign off labour starting but two weeks overdue. It was four days from the pessary.

Second- waters broke at 38 weeks, no sign of labour starting 24 hours later so had a hormone drip. This one took around 24 hours from starting the drip to the birth, it went quite fast/ was a lot more intense than the first!

How long is a piece of string?

When I was induced I had my waters artificially broken but my labour stalled at 5/6cm and I ended up having an EMCS. Total labour time was about 30 hours, 16 hours with the balloon catheter in and a few contractions, then 14 hours from having my waters broken to having a C-section.

Second time round was a spontaneous labour, 18 hours from first proper contractions to baby being born, of which 16 were counted as early labour (to 3cm) and only the last two were counted as active labour (went from 3-10 in an hour and started pushing an hour after that).

I’ve had 5 inductions, only ever needed waters breaking, quickest was 14 minutes, slowest was 5 hours. My first child I gave birth to naturally and she was 20 min start to finish.
To be honest, it’s how long is a piece of string - everyone is different. Try not to worry too much, I know it’s hard.

I don't want to scare you but that scenario can end in an emergency c-section - that was my experience after waters broke and I was induced. I just never progressed and there were other problems. I later found out that's quite common for induction not to be successful. I'm sorry I don't have the stats to hand.

What I will say was that I'd been very frightened of the idea of a c-section beforehand and felt it was a failure on my part. But it really, really isn't. It's a medical marvel. It's no different from accepting any other medical intervention.

If it gets to a couple of days with no progress, your friend can suggest going straight to c-section instead of waiting even longer. I'm so glad I did - I found out afterwards that in my case it was almost inevitable but they wanted to keep "waiting and seeing" even though I was getting very distressed and exhausted with the induction.

Best of luck to your friend

5 days. Worth it 100%

Royalbloo · 18/06/2023 19:38

Also c/section. Still worth it x

Once I was on a drip with my first at 35+5, it was just under 12 hours if I remember correctly. Hope all goes well for your friend and baby

kernowpicklepie · 18/06/2023 19:46

First was spontaneous, first contraction at 3:30am and DD born at 10:2am.
Second, waters broke at 35 weeks. 5am Xmas morning along with bloody show.
Nothing was really happening so st 1:30pm they put me on the lowest setting on the hormone drip and an hour later DS was born.

Roselilly36 · 18/06/2023 19:59

Varies so much. DS1 10hrs, born the day before he was due, 8lb 11ozDS2 2.5hrs, 10 days early, 9lb 3ozBoth natural labours, no pain relief.

Thank you all.

I've not spoken to her since 2.45 just her mum messaging me. Not sure how dilated she is, but yesterday morning she was only 1cm with no contractions. She's had 2 pessaries in they didn't do anything since Tuesday.
Her mum said she is having the hormone drip ripped up every 30 mins. That was about 5pm she told me that. So not sure what it means regarding labour.

They've had to bring baby early due to protein in her irons being quite high but her blood pressure was normal. Also blood flow through the umbilical cord was a bit off. No idea what that means either

Hormone drip topped up every 30 minutes and protein in her urine. Bloody auto correct

I've had two drip induced labours. Both had ARM and zero contractions beforehand. Needed the drip turned up to nearly maximum before consistent contractions.

Baby 1: 11.5 hours on the drip until holding baby.
Baby 2: 15 hours. Except there were breaks to have an epidural inserted, and while waiting for a theatre to open up to have a C-section.

Dyra · 18/06/2023 20:13

Yeah, the hormone drip gets turned up every half an hour until you're contracting the requisite 3 contractions in 10 minutes lasting 1 minute each. Memories....

Also guessing they're worried the placenta is failing (cord blood flow) and/or pre-eclampsia (protein in the urine).

Five days- no induction. Ended up having forceps. Still worth it!
