I am wondering, are most people still continuing with intimate hair removal right up until just before giving birth? Or have you just left it?

I am currently 29 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I previously shaved my fanjo regularly, but I've been slacking since bump has grown as it's been too much of a hassle to continue with it. I've not done it for over a month. I know babies don't care if their mum has hair there or not (well I assume they don't), but I'm a bit concerned about the reaction from nurses, doctors or other medical staff who might be present when I give birth. Do they care at all if you haven't shaved down below? It might seem a daft question but it's been on my mind. I'm worried about a lot of other things too, but this is definitely on the list.

It IS because of porn. Women in the porn industry have always shaved so as not to obscure the view, and men started to accept that as the norm. So their reaction made women feel that their natural bodies were disgusting, ugly, smelly, unclean......And so misogyny became internalised.

CurlewKate · 18/06/2023 21:01

Incidentally, in the 1970s women were always shaved as part of routine preparation for birth. It took brave, committed campaigning from feminist women to stop the practice. And 10 minutes for the porn industry to persuade women to do it to themselves.

MargotBamborough · 18/06/2023 21:02

I very much doubt whether they will care.

Do it if you want to, not if you don't.

I had a wax a few days before my son was born and was glad of it because I ended up having a C-section and didn't have to deal with stubble growing up through/around the incision when it was still healing. I had a normal bikini wax the week before my daughter was due but this time I asked the beautician to leave the top bit over the C-section scar and I did that bit myself right at the last minute when I was in early labour to postpone the regrowth for as long as possible in case I had another C-section, but in the end it was a VBAC and couldn't have mattered less.

I stopped shaving many years before DC were born.

Didn’t bother the midwives and I had stitches, no shaving was required.

I remember a time when there was a massive campaign to stop the enforced shaving of women in the labour ward. We won that campaign. And now- 50 years later, women are ashamed of HCPs seeing their pubic hair. It's really, really shit isn't it?

I came on this thread to see if anyone had said this. We didn’t have a choice once.

I know it’s an anxious time OP, but you cannot seriously imagine that anyone gives a shit whether you are rocking a full bush, or lazered into into oblivion. Why would they?

Hoppinggreen · 18/06/2023 21:16

If your fanny is as nature intended then the medical staff will back away screaming as they have probably never seen one with hair on before.

I’m glad my post set some minds at ease. I think it’s cyclical- all my patient age 28-40 (my age) tend to apologise for hairy legs, wouldn’t have armpit hair or mention it with embarrassment when im fitting an implant etc whereas young twenties/teens often have armpit hair, unshaven legs and as I said pubic hair and no stress. It’s so refreshing! I dare say if you went to a different area things might be different but I have a diverse cultural population and lots of white British students and most are embracing the hair.

That’s very good to hear, there was a period where removing it all did seem to be standard, and while I am all for people doing what they want individually, removing all your pubes becoming the norm is pretty damn odd.

@CrazyArmadilloLady yes it was a joke. Based upon a play of words as the poster accidentally said she’d never ‘shared’ her vagina.

sorry if you didn’t get it but no need to be quite so mean to a total stranger

I would honestly be mortified if my Punic hair was so wild they had to shave it for a section. I will be waxing until the end!

Nothing wrong with a full Punic bush

NadjaCravensworth1 · 18/06/2023 21:34

I didn't shave throughout pregnancy, I really can't see that nurses would care a jot...and trust me it will be the last thing on your mind. Do whatever you feel comfortable with but certainly don't shave to please nurses

I wouldn’t have passed a remark if it were just that comment - you have commented unnecessarily oddly several times on this thread.

Catbumps · 18/06/2023 22:36

@CrazyArmadilloLady I’m not sure you get to be the judge on what posts are necessary or not. Why would you think you do?

CrazyArmadilloLady · 18/06/2023 22:54

It’s a discussion forum. I can post whatever I like, within talk guidelines.

You are telling multiple people off and/or judging their comments. But you don’t seem to like it at all, when someone does it to you…………..

There is nothing undignified about giving birth. Shame on you for saying so.

I projectile vomited pink all over the room. That was fairly undignified. The nurses were lovely.

If they can handle that, a little public hair (which is better for infection) won't have them screaming.

@CrazyArmadilloLady agreed. So why do you think I can’t. You’re very confusing

Catbumps · 18/06/2023 23:54

also telling people off? Are you 12?!

rickandmorts · 18/06/2023 23:56

I trimmed mine with dps clippers a week or so before DD was born. Just because I find it really hot and itchy when I let it grow too long. Was glad I did because I had an episiotomy that got infected and feel like it was easier to keep clean without loads of hair. But do what you want! HCPs literally won't give a shit.

Confused

I didn’t say you couldn’t?

I just asked if you were quite OK due to your multiple odd comments.

Madwife123 · 19/06/2023 00:21

After delivery the LAST thing you’re going to want to do is shave down there.

So while dealing with postpartum bleeding, any tears or stitches healing, the exhaustion of motherhood etc. you’re going to have itchy regrowth!

Leave well alone! We don’t care and we don’t even notice. We’re too busy keeping you and baby safe.

Well you're less likely to get infections in the first place with hair. So it's swings and roundabouts.

shakeitoffsis · 19/06/2023 20:13

I had a Hollywood wax 2 days before giving birth to both my kids. Had stitches both times and very neat.

PollyPeep · 19/06/2023 21:18

No I wouldn't shave!! Post partum is uncomfortable enough without itchy, spikey regrowth 😬😬 Can't think of anything worse. And you probably won't want to be shaving down there for a few weeks afterwards anyway because of any healing or stitches. Perhaps just a trim with scissors to make it easier to keep clean afterwards?

Intimate hair removal? I had trouble getting my shoes on and off in the third trimester.
