Am I being totally unrealistic??

Posted something similar on pregnancy thread few days ago as DS was due minor op 10 days before my due date - we have now postponed this as there's a bigger issue!

DH has rapidly progressing MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and is on a drugs trial which is helping a bit - his next lot of treatment has been delayed for several unavoidable reasons and he really needs it ASAP to stop him going downhill too fast.

Only problem is that his next treatment is 5 days before baby is due. and is at Addenbrookes in Cambridge - 3 hours away. He has to stay in for 3 days

I am proposing to go with him and stay with my parents (who are just 10 miles from the hospital) take my notes and hospital bag with me and just hope the baby is late like the last one.

Am I being totally unrealistic here? Will the hospital really be that bothered that I'm not registered under them?

I had my two at The Rosie in Addenbrookes the staff there are fab and I'm pretty sure if you go into labour they're not going to turf you out. It's called The Rosie Maternity hospital why don't you give them a ring and see what they say.

I don't think you are being unrealistic, I think you are being amazing. You are supporting your husband when he needs you. That means everything in a marriage. Why don't you give the midwifery unit at the hospital near your parents house a ring, tell them the scenario and see what they say? Bottom line is - if you want to be near your husband during his treatment, you have every right to be, and if your baby comes early - well, it's meant to be!

I'd have thought they can't turn you away if you ended up piled on the doorstep in labour, registered or not. But, what if, god forbid, something went wrong, and you didn't have your notes, they could seriously get it wrong.

Could you not go in and see them before DH has his treatment and maybe register, or something similar, so at least they would be forwarned?

You'll be fine. My SIL gave birth when she was staying with her mum in London (she lives in Leeds) and the hospital were fine. The only silly thing was that they insisted on copying her notes out onto their own forms before they'd give her the antibiotics she needed for strep B

It'll be fine, if you go into labour while you are away from home. If it happens then ring the labour ward at Addenbrookes, explain the situation and then go in when necessary just as you would if you were going into the hospital you're booked at. They won't turn you away so don't worry. It's a good idea to have your notes with you even if everything is okay so that have a baseline bp.

Can't advise you on attending a hospital that you're not registered at but wanted to wish you and DH lots of luck with the drug trial. I hope it slows down the progression.

I had to go and stay with my mum at 38 weeks (well, I didn't have to, but it was the only realistic time we could make it) and I was advised to make sure I had my notes and a hospital bag with me in case I did have an early baby.

As it happened, I didn't, she came just about dead on time but I'm sure that everyone will be more than understanding if you do go into labour while you are there. Just make sure you are prepared for it. Make double, triple, quadruple sure you have your notes - if you're in a different hospital, you will really need them.

Good luck for your dh's treatment - and good luck with the new baby

Hi Moominsmummy - I chose to have my baby where my parents live (as I was on my own then). It was in a different health authority and they just used and added to my original notes. No problems whatsover.
