Another baby after pre eclampsia and retained placenta

Had DD 10 months ago after being induced for preeclampsia. Managed to get her out without forceps etc after 2 hours of pushing however my placenta then didn’t deliver and had to go to theatre to have it manually removed.

Has anyone had both of these and gone on to have another baby without having any issues or a repeat performance? I’ve also got pretty severe stress incontinence which hasn’t been fun! But would like another baby in a couple of years.

I'm close to your criteria. I had pre-eclampsia, was induced, and I should have gone to theatre for a manual removal after having DC1. Luckily, I was bumped by an emergency C-section and they weren't willing to open a second theatre as I wasn't losing any blood. Placenta finally came out while we were waiting.

With my second, I had a repeat of pre-eclampsia. It was mild first time, and even milder the second. Felt embarrassing being admitted to hospital when I felt fine. Was induced again. I can't speak to the placenta unfortunately. In a bout of stunning bad luck, DC2 got themselves stuck in labour so I had a C-section. As far as I'm aware, the placenta came away perfectly.

I had severe pre-eclampsia in my first pregnancy, I was induced the same day that I was diagnosed as my placenta was failing and was also causing my liver to fail. I ended up having an emergency section so can't comment about the retained placenta.

I was monitored very closely in my second pregnancy and had no symptoms of pre-eclampsia at all. I was put on aspirin at 16 weeks to prevent it.

@Dyra sorry to hear you had another difficult birth! Interesting that the placenta came out itself eventually with the first, makes me wonder if mine could have.

@Kam610 that’s great that you didn’t get pre eclampsia again. Was there anything else you did differently e.g diet changes or was it just the aspirin?

No diet changes. I had gestational diabetes in both pregnancies so was basically following a keto diet throughout both. I don't think that would have made a difference though. I got myself a blood pressure monitor and checked my BP every day at home between midwife appointments.

I had severe pre eclampsia on DC1 but no issues with retained placenta as it was a c section. I ended up in high dependency and had to stay in for two weeks after the birth and on meds for ages. I had a few niggles with DC2 and another emergency c section but everything was less severe than previous and then on DC3 (which was an unplanned surprise pregnancy at 43 ) not one bit of high blood pressure and no issues at all with me.

Yes. Hypertension throughout pregnancy, induction for pre-eclampsia, fast labour , bad ventouse, eclampsia then I was sedated for 48 hours. Baby very unwell, suspected brain damage. No clue about placenta (out of it before then) but I needed a D and C and to be re-stitched before leaving hospital. We survived with warning "don't get pregnant again, you're lucky to be taking home a live baby. Don't hope for too much". Floppy sluggish baby was a very slow developer.... who caught up. Strong skier, cyclist, surfer, consultant DR.

Second pregnancy healthy and trouble free; natural fast labour at 40+7 days, 10 pound baby lying backwards, forceps delivery , no pre eclampsia. placenta delivered fine, baby alert and perfect.

thanks all. Sounds like, for the most part, people’s subsequent births went a bit better. Hopefully I’ll be able to overcome my fear and just go for it!
