CD for C-section?

I've been told to bring a CD along in my hospital bag to listen to during the operation but did anyone not bother? Last time I took CDs to listen to in labour but DD was born in theatre anyway and it was such a scary experience that music was the last thing on my mind. This time I'm just glad that I'm going to be having a planned section and for me that is relaxing enough. I don't think I'm going to need a CD to calm me down or make me feel more at home. I saw the consultant today and he said not to forget my CD and when I said I wasn't bringing one he was amazed and now I feel perhaps I ought to take one!

The only thing that makes me think I might want to take one is that I will find it difficult to be myself in front of all the other people in theatre and DH and I will probably just stare at each other in awkward silence throughout the procedure.

On the other hand I don't want to annoy the staff with my taste in music when I want them to give their full concentration!

Any thoughts? What did you do?

Hi, mine was an emergency C-Section, very fast 10 minutes and I an having another one in Sept. I am not taking a Cd. As you know, there is not time. You just feel them pushing your insides, without pain, you hear the noise of liquid being drained and then your son or daughter crying. I would not want to hear music of any kind. I fact my husband recorded everything with a pocket casette player.
Enjoy the experience.

Hi Yeni
Have just got my date for planned section and have been hoping I'll be able to take a CD in with me, so I think the fact they keep mentioning it is lovely

When I had DD by 'emergency' section (it wasn't dire emergency) I wanted to ask about music but was a bit afraid to/in shock, so it would be nice to this time, just for a bit of atmosphere as it is obviously very clinical (I'd wanted a home birth so it was pretty far removed!)

Ideally I would take a couple of CDs and you can then decide between you what to listen to - I agree I wouldn't want to impose something annoying on the staff either!

I haven't quite got to the point of deciding what to take though - have just over 4 weeks to go.

I posted about this a few days ago. I'm having an elective a week on Thursday and was going to take a Peter Kay CD for the labour before I knew I was having a CS. Not sure that I want the surgeon laughing to "Garlic............BREAD?" as he makes the first incision.

I'm thinking of something mellow, I have some Tibetan music which is very meditative. Not sure I really want to hear the actual op.

No one suggested taking in a CD when my dd was born by cs last year - when I was being prepped in the theatre the radio was on, playing Bjork who i like so i was quite happy, but one of the nurses suddenly said 'oh bloody hell, we can't have baby coming out to this racket!' and changed it to classic fm!

MrsMattie · 18/02/2008 15:41

When I had ac-section they had the radio on in the operating theatre. Just as the doctor said 'you're going to meet you baby in just a minute...' a Daniel Bedingfield song came on. I hate Daniel Bedingfield. I remember thinking 'Great. My child is going to be welcomed to the world by the warblings of the arrogant, froggy looking one..'. Luckily, John Legend's 'Ordinary People' came on in the nick of time. A sweet song to be born to . Moral of the story: Bring something you really like!

My DH has worked in theatres all over the north west and they almost always have the radio or a cd on. I took my own in when I had an elective with DS, (he was born to a razorlight song) didn't want to get stuck listening to any old tat!! With DD it was a crash section and I think it might have been Kylie on in the background...

VictorianSqualor · 18/02/2008 15:48

My DS was born to Al Green- Tired of being alone, the surgeons choice though.
I'd take one just incase they are happy to do it, you could end up going in and mentioning that you wanted to and them saying you could've and you'd be pretty annoyed.

eleusis · 18/02/2008 15:50

I took one. I made it DH's job to make the CD. He is a music buff and has every song you've ever hear recorded and save on a hard drive somewhere in our house already. It was nice. Although I might have reviewed the choices as DS was born to I kid you not "jerk it out". DH thought that was very funny.

Agree with the radio warning, if you don't take a CD your child could be born to the sound of tv retailer adverts on local radio!

We randomly had James Blunt's "Beautiful" on the radio (section under GA, husband had to lurk outside the doo) which was nice

Thanks everyone! I'm still undecided but I'll have to get a wiggle on if I'm going to compile one. I'm worried DH might walk out becuase he doesn't share my taste in music!

Girls, I am changing my mind.
With my emergency C-Section they did not have the radio on. I did not know that is what they usually do.
I will have something ready just in case for my elective C-section.
A CD of relaxing music.
Thanks for the info.
