Elective C sections around the strikes chat

Hi there, I thought it might be good to have a thread for ladies having elective c-sections between now and the end of April. With the bank holidays and strikes coming up I’ve started to hear stories of electives being rescheduled, pre ops being changed and even being moved to different hospitals in other counties.

I am due to have my pre op on the 13th April and my elective on the 17th.

I’m anticipating there being stories of people also being bumped on the day and it wouldn’t surprise me if my own was as it’s technically a category 4. I have to have it but there’s no threat to me or the baby delaying it. Is anyone else starting to prepare for their elective around the strikes?

I'm am anaesthetist. My elective section list next week is going ahead as planned. From looking at our current rota, we should have enough cover in my hospital to continue electives alongside any emergency obstetric work. Fingers crossed yours will be similar!

@SockQueen that’s reassuring to hear thank you!

Just wanted to come on to say we have exactly matching dates 🙂. My pre op on 13th and c section on 17th. I haven't really been keeping up with the strikes, didn't know there were some coming up.

I'm so scared of childbirth, going into Labour early and not getting a section that the thought of strikes is now causing me huge anxiety 😢. I hope everything will be alright

@Avocadot0ast @inky1991

my pre-op is 12th and ELCS is 14th so last day of the strike. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ I have no idea what to expect. But has now concerned me about being skeleton staff or being bumped.

I’m the same that no imminent risk to me or baby for needing it. I am having it for a medical reason but due to my last birth. So the idea of going into labour. Also terrifying as I had severe PTSD from my natural labour and a host of complications hence my section.

I guess all we can do is wait and hope. Can’t even speak to a midwife to ask until Tuesday how either to know if it will likely go ahead or not as they will of done a rota for next week by now. But anything can change I guess.

I do feel like it’ll be a wait and see what happens next week, I know it’s not unusual for plans to change with electives due to emergencies anyway, my first was a cat 2 emergency and I bumped someone who was getting prepped for their spinal. So far it’s all good in the c section and birthing groups I’m in, only a couple of ladies have had plans changed by a day or two.

Heath2330 · 09/04/2023 11:08

I have my pre op Wednesday and csection scheduled for Thursday not sure if my trust is effected but nothing was mentioned about it changing when I seen consultant on Thursday but will update or anything changes

Dyerun · 09/04/2023 11:14

All elective sections should be going ahead as planned in my hospital

Someo · 09/04/2023 11:20

I had my pre op rearranged from tomorrow to yesterday. Was told they are busy. Didn't fill me with confidence tbh. Planned section still OK for Tuesday 11th. 😬

Avocadot0ast · 10/04/2023 18:53

I had to go in today for change of movements and the hospital was very quiet but the staff were so busy and over stretched, I really felt for them. One of the support workers was chatting to me and said they haven’t changed this weeks schedule for planned c sections (she does the prep) but gave the standard line of “if too many emergencies come in then the planned ones that aren’t urgent will have to be rescheduled” so it sounds like they are prepared pretty well given the circumstances. A lady was advised to stay in for observations for the week and they booked her in for her c section next week, when she asked why they couldn’t do it this week the registrar said the diary was full for planned but if anything happened she would still have a c section it would just be classed as an emergency c section as it’s not in the diary.

I was scanned and told to come back if anything else happened as I refused to stay in. If I thought I was contracting, my waters went, if I was worried about movements again etc. The registrar was really quite firm, I hadn’t even mentioned them being busy this week due to the strikes and he said “you call us with anything, don’t worry about the the stuff in the news don’t worry about being a bother if you’re worried or anything happens come straight in” So I really feel like hospitals are ready and prepared for us.
