WWYD - elcs versus vaginal

Due DC3 in August after a ten year gap!

Both previous births were vaginal - DC1 with epidural and ventouse. DC2 born with just gas and air, birthing pool but had complications including shoulder dystocia, pph and sepsis (me - not baby). Ended up in intensive care, needed blood transfusions and whatnot.

I am freaking out about giving birth again and am leaning towards an ELCS. Consultant is happy to support - says the risks are only marginally higher in general compared to a 'straightforward' vaginal delivery, but of course DC2 was far from straightforward.

I'm scared of having surgery. But it feels more 'controlled', and I am of course scared of another shoulder dystocia and the cascade of events that seemed at least in part, to stem from that.

We're expecting the baby to be big - I know it isn't always predictable but DC2 was 9lbs 8oz.

Has anyone been in a similar position? Would you go for the elcs?

I can't compare ELCS with Vag as I've only ever had ELCS but my section was amazing and due another in September. These are due to cerebral palsy in two family members therefore wasn't willing to take risks as my baby was already back to back and measuring large.

ELCS: Controlled, little pain, a little discomfort during, baby comes out fast, many experienced health care professionals in the room at the time, little side effects after, manageable post op pain, you know when you're going in to have baby so no surprises (house/husband/other children sorted!) and lots of great post op care and support.

That was my experience! Not all have the same!

I also work in theatres so I have a good understanding of what can go wrong and how the operation plays out.

More women should be offered ELCS as standard!!

Weigh up your risks yourself and all the best!
