I just bought one and passed it on to a pregnant friend when I was done. It was only a out a fiver cheaper to rent when I looked in to it.

Oh I see. It’s like £69 to buy the “best one” and £24 to rent for 6 weeks

I'm using mine today 10 years after last child was born. Helps my sore shoulders. Other members of the family have used it on aches & pains & lent it to friends for their births.

It's completely up to you, I don't see how the best one would deliver any more effective pain relief than a bog standard one.

For me it wasn't worth the worry of breaking it, forgetting to return it etc.

They are effective things though, mine got me through a labour without any other pain relief. I had a water birth second time which was bloody hideous in comparison.

I hired mine. I’m now 6 months post partum and wishing I still had it because I’ve got lower back pain.

Just be careful, I absolutely hated my water birth and the midwife would not support me to get out, kept telling me I was nearly there etc, I made my wishes very clear and they were completely ignored. Fucking horrible experience.

Tbh it might not be accessible when I get induced. The hospital i’m at keeps closing serenity ( birthing centre ) down for a long while and then opening it up again, due to lack of midwifes, so if it’s closed it would be labour ward with pain relief anyway but it’s written in my birth plan to have both/go to labour ward with pain relief if I struggle.

My midwife said to me water helps though and i could fly through it as i’ve never done it before. But I don’t know I don’t like the idea of childbirth with just gas and air even though pain relief can have side effects. Anyway thank you for the warning.

My mum uses a tens machine for back pain so if you are prone to that it will get worse hefting a baby around so you might want to buy one!

Mine has got lots of use PP with the after pains. Some women don't get them too bad but I have had them so strongly. I rented a tens and that enabled me to have it for a month PP too.

I've heard tens machine can be useful for period pains.

For anyone stumbling on this thread (because this thread comes up quite high in google), the Boots brand one says on the box that they can be used for things other than labour pains. This would apply to the Orbi-TENS machines too, as those are the same as the boots ones, just in a different colour.

Also, as an aside, some of the older boots/orbi ones (model D-BC06T) seem to output more power than the new ones (D-BC62T) (200mA max output vs 100mA max output).
