Please help: sudden very heavy bleeding 14 days after the birth - is this normal???

I'm trying to stay calm and tell myself that this isn't anything to worry about, but...

After 14 days my lochia has pretty much reduced to a small trickle, although I have had a womb infection and was just re-prescribed antiobiotics again this morning as the last batch didn't completely clear it up (which may make a difference?).
Anyway, just went to the loo and the whole bowl was filled with lots of blood, which was also running down my legs (sorry if TMI - basically exactly like the way I was bleeding immediately after giving birth.

Is this normal?

If it isn't normal, what do I do??

Thanks!

Ring your MW x

LadyOfWaffle · 12/02/2008 14:41

How long has it been heavy?

beansprout · 12/02/2008 14:42

I had similar last week (big clots too) and was told it was ok but still think you should check. Try to rest if you can.

pippylongstockings · 12/02/2008 14:44

I would ring some-one just to be safe. Maybe there still was a bit of placenta that has just cleared itself. With my DS2 I had a really 'fresh' bleed about two weeks after giving birth but it wasn't heavy.

Rang my MW team (got a total stranger ) who said I should call 999 and get an ambulance to A&E if it continued in case it was a secondary hemoarrage (sp??). Trouble is, she was very unhelpful in terms of amounts/time etc...I'm definitely not going the 999 route unless something is 99.99% wrong!!

That's why I thought I'd check on here....

this will almost certainly be due to your infection. i had a uterine infection post birth of my DD and about a week after i finished the course of antibiotics i had a big blood loss and clot (which the doc said was the cause of my infection). i had to take another course and it cleared up that time. i would ring your MW or GP for reassurance if you are worried. agree completely with beansprout - rest - you've very possible done too much too soon, remember body been growing bump for over 9 months and will take a wee while to heal

phone call to mw wouldn't go amiss either esp when you've had a womb infection

MW also suggested resting, so am going to try to lie down for an hour as dc2 has just settled...thanks for advice, must admit to being quite freaked out/scared. Definitely didn't have anything like this last time....

have you been really busy - doing more stuff that usual? Sometimes that can cause more heavy red bleeding.

beansprout · 12/02/2008 14:49

I had ventured out and about too quickly but it's better now after a bit of rest. How do you feel in youraelf?

fluffymummy · 12/02/2008 17:39

Thanks for all your replies - I feel a bit for panicking....I'm still bleeding quite a lot but not enough to justify major fears - I suspect its nothing just a combination of overdoing it a bit (easily done with an active toddler in tow!), the antibiotics maybe clearing something and general weird body stuff. Although if it carries on for more than a day or so I will go back to my GP, just to be on the safe side. Anyway, thanks again to everyone for support and reassurance And I promise to try harder to keep my feet up and get some rest !!
