Hello all,

Wife due end of May, lots of new clothes of course for incoming baby girl however a bit clueless as to best strategy for washing the clothes?

Of course lots available online etc but I’ve had great help from this forum before so thought it worth asking the mums for advice!

Much appreciated thank you!

Open washing machine door
Load baby clothes
Add powder and Lenor
Press START..
Line dry for maximum loveliness...

Neve washed new clothes for my newborn. They were already clean!

Me neither - straight off the hanger, cut off tags and dress baby. My DC are no longer babies, they are fine, nothing happened to them as a result of not washing their clothes before they were first worn.

You don't need a strategy. Wash clothes when they are dirty.

Choice4567 · 20/03/2023 17:59

I’m not really sure what you’re asking? How do you normally wash clothes?

lovechickencrisps · 20/03/2023 18:00

@Desperatelytryingdad most people use Non bio washing powder / liquid for baby clothes and wash them separately to adult clothes.

I washed all brand new baby clothes as I didn't know who had been coughing / spluttering over them or dragging them around the shop. Might have been a waste of time though. Who knows?

redbigbananafeet · 20/03/2023 18:35

The same way as you wash your own clothes but with non-bio

Mumof1andacat · 20/03/2023 18:38

Never washed any new clothes as if you don't use them you can exchange them for the next size up

welshweasel · 20/03/2023 18:40

Never washed new/hand me down clothes before washing. Once worn they went in with the rest of our washing - we use Ariel bio, it is great for stained clothes. The whole non-bio thing is fictional, there is no evidence it is worse for skin than bio, and it's far inferior for removing stains. Most countries don't even sell non-bio!

TheCraicDealer · 20/03/2023 18:50

I never washed anything new, aside from muslins because —I had two much time on my hands— I wanted them to smell of me/our house when I was using them in hospital. Once DD was home I washed everything of hers alongside our stuff, all in bio detergent (powder for whites) which is best for getting biological stains out anyway. Tbh I don’t know anyone who washed baby stuff separately or with special detergent, you’re busy enough once they get home to be making work for yourself unnecessarily.

First baby used non bio separating baby clothes from ours, second baby whatever was on special offer all clothes thrown in together!

You beat me to it Grin

Lcb123 · 20/03/2023 21:55

er, in the washing machine like any other clothes?

FoxFeatures · 20/03/2023 22:04

I always wash new clothes before wearing. They spray them with anti fungal spray when made, which isn't great to be close to your/or your child's skin.
Who knows who might have tried them on before you? I just could bear to have something touching my skin that wasn't clean.
