im due to have a membrane sweep tomorrow, ill be 41+1.
from what ive read on here some people say they are horrendous and really painful, others say its not so bad and now im quite scared about it.

does how over-due you are make a difference to how painful it is?

I was 41 weeks when I had had mine. I didn't find it painful at all, was a bit uncomfortable, but didn't hurt.

Labour is far worse

It's not great, a bit like smear tests are never a laugh but I told myself it wasn't the worst thing I would feel before the baby was out and it really wasn't so bad. Only takes a minute so breathe and count to 20 and you'll be done!

Good luck.

don;t have one !!

if your cervix is more to the front (anterior) and more soft and open it is not as uncomfortable

i had one in the latent stage of labour and did not feel it , wheras one i had at 39 weeks was very sore

you do not have to have one if you do not want to.....and of course, if it is too painful, ask the MW to stop

make a concious effort to relax, do not clench your teeth or your fists, try to let go and take really slow deep breaths

Ah, don't worry. Its uncomfortable, can be a bit painful afterwards with cramping, but its not really bad.

It will depend on how high up your cervix is.

When I had my first I didn't have a sweep - and I got a shock when they examined me for dialation (don't ask me how I thought they checked - I just hadn't thought about it!) [dur emoticon]

Last time I had 5 sweeps, for the first my cervix was high and not ready so she had to get in quite a way IYSWIM.

So, it all depends on different factors. If its too high and too uncomfortable to perform a proper sweep, then there's probably not much point in doing it anyway, and you can ask her to stop because it probably won't help at that stage.

Good luck with it. Relax and it'll be easier.

ive been having pains that feels like someone's poking my cervix with a knitting needle, could that mean its opening??

im going to go ahead with it, i want my bod back now, babys hogged it enough and my midwife is lovely so i know i can relax with her.

They should assess your cervix before doing a sweep. They should only do one if your cervix is favourable.
I had sweeps. Not painful at all just mildly uncomfortable.
