Any recommendations for ind midwives in N London? And experiences of taking one into NHS hosp?

Subject line sort of covers it I guess! I know that if you bring an independent midwife into an NHS hospital they will not be in theory in charge of your care and will not be able to deliver the baby. So does anyone have any stories of how much/little difference having one there actually made? I really want to try & ensure continuity of care after a ropey experience last time round.

And if anyone knows any wonderful midwives who work in North London please tell me!

thanks all...

Not a North London based practice (though they cover North London), but I used South London Independent Midwives for both my last two babies. They're brilliant, as several other mums on this board will attest to.

I had my second at home, but my third was born in hospital - with my midwife working together with the NHS midwife, who was very grateful to have her there.

I know in theory they aren't allowed to act as midwives in terms of making clinical decisions etc, but I suspect in reality they often 'feel' like the lead professional in the births they attend in hospital. I know that's how it felt to me.

Oh that's great Sabire, thank you. I will get in touch with them.

I'm very glad to hear it worked so well having them at the hospital with you.

I've never used them as midwives but I was taught an NCT class by the lady who runs maya independent midwives. She was a very good NCT teacher and if I had the money I would probably be contacting her for number 2.

Have a look on the Independent midwife Association website

www.independentmidwives.org.uk

Thank you youngvisiter - I have just had a look at that website and they look absolutely lovely.
